    Summary

"So to keep yourself from getting hurt by love, you're…casting a spell to…find it?" Sam says, her face twisted up in confusion as Lena wanders the garden gathering the herbs she needs. It's dark outside, and they're darting between shadows – the garden is here for the kitchen staff to pick fresh ingredients from, and the last time Lillian found her snipping rosemary she was confined to her room for two months.

"I'm calling for Amas Veritas," Lena clarifies. "I'm binding myself to a person that doesn't exist."

"How do you know they don't exist?"

"They can't. No person can fit all my criteria. And if they don't exist, I can never fall in love."

    OR

Lena Luthor is cursed. Everyone she loves is doomed to die; it would take someone truly indestructible to survive a magic that’s ingrained in her very bloodline. When she binds herself to a true love that can’t exist, the last thing she expects is for Kara Danvers to turn up and prove her wrong.

    Summary

The woman who opens the door is nothing like Kara expected.

She’s not a housewife. She’s young, probably Kara’s age, and alarmingly pretty. She looks loose, and carefree, and stylish. She looks like a catalog model. No…even better. Those women don’t have half the curves that this woman does, they don’t have her subtle smile or her bright green eyes –

Bright green eyes that are staring directly at Kara.

    “Can I help you?”

    OR

Kara is a sexless housewife in 1969, feeling trapped and not knowing why. But when mysterious, kind-hearted Lena Luthor moves in next door, hosting swinger’s parties but ignoring the men, Kara’s whole world shifts on its axis.

Written just like 1950’s lesbian pulp fiction, Kara’s spiral and then realization of love reminds me of when I fell in love with my girlfriend and all the scary (and amazing) things that come with it

    Summary

Recently, Ava had been watching Youtube videos on mindfulness in an effort to try to increase the percentage of her thoughts she was able to keep just in her head. That training was about to fail her spectacularly. “One of the nuns is kind of cute.”

Mary’s fingers paused mid stitch. Ava’s fork paused halfway to her mouth as her brain caught up with what she’d just said.

    “Ava, what the fu—”

    Or,

Ava has to spend several weeks in a church archive. The person running the archive is a nun, and also hot. She is totally normal and respectful about this.

“Well, nothing happened. I mean there was nothing when I died. Sorry for the spoiler.” Ava didn’t know how she expected Beatrice to react, but when she looked over she found her smiling, just slightly. “It really freaked me out. I mean, hugely. That feeling of just—being nothing. And sometimes I remember that, and remember that this is all there is, and get so upset with myself for wasting time. I don’t even know what it is I need to feel happy. And sometimes I think I’m afraid to find it. But the more time passes, the more I realize how I’m just hurdling toward—“ The word nothing died on her mouth. She pursed her lips around it, keeping it inside.

Or, this actually ended up being a bit of a character study?? Which was not what my horny ass was expecting at all but it’s so much better. I love how the writing manifests physically. A word Ava swallows around. The sticky feeling in her chest when she sees Beatrice. Being so starstruck, like a coin appearing from an ear. How do you come up with this stuff?? It’s brilliant. And the subtlety of the ending, and all the weight it holds. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

    Summary

Home, to Ava, is flannel-backed chairs and worn quilts and lacy placemats and a rocking chair they find abandoned on the side of the road.

Home, to Beatrice, is Ava’s hand in her own as she drags Beatrice through the kitschy home store four towns over and Ava’s shout of triumph when she finds a matching set of salt and pepper shakers and Ava’s waggling eyebrows when they buy the bed that she (again) calls ours.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“Ava doesn’t keep secrets from Beatrice well, but she does keep a few.

The first, she keeps poorly: the three words she does not say, but fails to not show, saved only by Beatrice’s willful ignorance, by the weight of guilt pulling a thick veil over her eyes. The second, she keeps because of the first; Beatrice’s cooking hasn’t improved, not at all, and it shows with every meal Ava lies about having so much more flavor than the one before. The third and last is the one she keeps best, because it costs so little and gives so much; her three alarms and groggy mornings have little to do with laziness and everything to do with the hour or more she spends awake in the middle of each night, savoring the sensation of Beatrice’s body pressed against her own.”

It’s truly outrageous how many times I cried reading this. The slow burn is so, so palpable I could practically feel the yearning myself and it made me Emotional okay? Okay.

“Well, I thought maybe you could teach me how to fight on the ground.”

    “You mean jiu-jitsu?”

    “Yes. That.”

“Very well.” Beatrice replies shortly, which is all the warning Ava gets before she’s being flipped onto her back, nothing but Beatrice and the full weight of her bad decisions on top of her.

Beatrice is absolutely, positively, 100% flirting, Ava is sure. She just needs to bug Beatrice a bit so she realizes it.
