Hannibal Lecter was captured, and imprisoned as the Chesapeake Ripper, Will Graham has long since left the FBI and gone to shack up with Molly somewhere safe. Clarice Starling used Hannibal as a way to capture Buffalo Bill, but afterward he managed to escape. The Bureau in its infinite wisdom, blamed Clarice for the escape, not officially, not on any binding documents, but in a way that stalled her career.
While the press and wider community hail her as a hero for apprehending Buffalo Bill, Clarice was assigned to cold cases indefinitely. A small office in the bowels of the FBI in Washington DC, working alone, in a windowless room, in lamplight or powerful fluorescent overhead lights. She had not closed one case since her assignment, and the monotony of it all was being to show. Her skin paled, and her blue eyes had long since lost their sparkle, and really, if she had any other opportunity for a paycheck at this very time, she would have taken it. Hell, she’d even looked through positions at the local grocery store in recent days. Anything to stop the cycle.
Until Lecter's letter came, inviting her to Italy.
