A wave of heat washed over them. A massive blaze lit up the night sky over the New Angelique. A chain reaction triggered by a massive stockpile of ammunition and detonators set the entire ship ablaze, sending sparks flying as debris fell into the silent ocean.
Jason watched the scene unfold, when suddenly a wave of dizziness hit him. It felt as though the ground beneath his feet wasn’t solid, but something soft and swaying, like fabric. It was the aftereffect of spending too long at sea and then returning to land—land sickness. The whole world seemed to spin. He steadied himself against the railing, drawing on his training as he slowed his breathing.

Whatever anyone might say about it later, it’s not a rash decision when Jason chooses to put his immortality to the test. He’s spent weeks thinking about it, actually. Weeks where he can’t quite put it out of his mind. He’s even been wearing a heart monitor on patrol for a while now, just in case he has a potential death on the job. But after a month with no close calls, he’s starting to get impatient. And now he has the perfect opportunity to put it to the test himself. Because for the first time in far too long, he’s going to be Bat free for a bit. “It's fine, I'll pay for it,” Bruce says, brushing him off, pulling out a leather wallet from the pocket inside his coat. Jason is reminded with cruel nostalgia all those times where Bruce would do the same when he was young, it felt like magic then, when he'd pull his little black card and let it take care of everything as if it was the easiest thing in the world.
Jason felt fortunate then, omega and pup instincts giddy with being taken care of.
Right then Jason doesn't know how to feel. It feels bittersweet at most.
Either way, it's still an act.
Or: Jason wants a collar around his neck if Bruce is going to boss him and keep him around, not that the alpha seems to care.

Summary
Bruce showing up was just a cruel thing, Jason missed him more than words could express, hated Basil for taking his mate's appearance, hated the Joker for taking Bruce from Jason.
Deep down, Jason knew this one was actually Bruce, it didn't matter how much shape-shifting Basil did, he could never replicate Bruce's scent. It was like time hadn't passed, like nothing had changed, Bruce's scent of fresh dahlias, grass bathed in rain water, and cinnamon had Jason's heart hammering against his ribs uncontrollably. For the first time in two decades, Jason's instincts came alive, begging and crying for his alpha.
But he couldn't, if this was a trick, if this was fake, Jason couldn't take it.
