Everyone knows the spot, though nobody talks about it—not openly, at least.
Walk past the warehouses, late at night when they're all closed and their windows are dark: eventually you'll find yourself in an empty parking lot. You'll see that two of the ancient, flickering street lights have gone out, creating an ominously dark spot between them, like a circle of pure void. If you're brave enough to walk into the circle—and of course you are, if you've come this far—you'll stumble upon a sturdy, wooden picnic table, just the perfect height for you to bend over and lie on your stomach.
And wait.

Summary
The pain isn't the worst thing about the arrangement. There's the constant threat of the wooden pole right under Starling, and the way there are only the ropes supporting her body. If the mechanism fails… if the inquisitor's hands slip… Starling chokes on another sob and squeezes her eyes shut, but that only makes her more aware of the ropes biting into her flesh and the wooden poles keeping her limbs fixed into such a humiliating, helpless position.
"Are you ready to repent?" the inquisitor asks again and turns the winch slowly. His hands are steady and sure, the muscles in his bare arms bulging as he pauses to hold the winch in place. His face is hidden behind a black, featureless mask: only his eyes are visible. They are a startlingly pale shade of blue, as cold and unreadable as the winter sky as he observes Starling's suffering.
"F-fuck you," Starling spits out, a furious snarl replacing the despair on her face for a moment. "I will never… a-aah! Fuck, fuck! You m-monster!"

Too late I realize that everyone else has already left. I curse and try to stuff the files back into the cabinet, but my hands are shaking too much. Stupid, stupid, stupid—I should have paid more attention to the passage of time. Now it's only me and—
"Ah, there's my favorite employee!" a deep, jovial voice says behind me. "Working hard, I see."
"S-sir," I stutter and force my hand to unclench from around a sheet of paper, now hopelessly creased. "I was just, I…" Now my hand is sliding over the paper, trying to make it lie flat again, and I stare at it without real comprehension. I don't even know what the rest of my body is doing: my awareness is focused entirely on the looming presence behind me—now coming closer with slow, measured steps, until he's close enough that I can feel his body heat.
A large hand grabs my wrist, ceasing the jerky movements. "Don't worry about that," he murmurs into my ear and grabs my other wrist, pressing them both against the table. "I can think of a better use for your hands. What do you say?"

Arnas had only ever seen him from a distance, and to witness him like this—to see all his famous beauty up close, but also the small imperfections that made him human, from the slightly frizzy ends of his long hair to the small scar on his chin—it was dizzying. For so long, he had existed in Arnas's mind as some kind of mythical being, barely even real—yet in this moment, he was the most vividly real thing Arnas had seen in his life.
