Fermi, a human botanist, gets assigned to a cold type 3 Deathworld as a researcher. A bit chilly, but with a nice base and warm clothes nothing to be scared of. Her coworkers are lovely, and the work is intriguing.
She makes very good friends in the two aliens who work with her.
The only problem is. If the planet is trying to kill them all, for her it would need some effort, and for them it doesn't need to do anything.
The cold will do them in on it's own.

Fun fact: Rocky's language (Not the only one Eridians have! But they don't have quite as many as Earth, presumably because they live so much longer. Or maybe because their memories are so good, I don't know, I'm not a linguist) loves declension. It's a real pity Ilyukhina isn't here, she would definitely be picking it all up quicker than I am.
"Uh," I say. "Partner, I guess? But that's not exclusively platonic, and you aren't usually… married? Eridians marry friends?"
"Some friends," Rocky says, as if the distinction should be obvious. "Best friends. Most best friends. Rocky marry Grace, question?"

The person in the video is clearly a practiced archer, and they effortlessly hit bulls-eyes from double the distance of the spear throw. They fire multiple arrows in quick succession, and Rocky makes a little squeaking noise with every thunk they make into the target.
“Weapon is… very powerful.”
“Yeah, it certainly can be, but it takes a lot of practice to be able to shoot like that. Archery is more of a sport these days, but some people still hunt with a bow and arrows.”
Rocky falls silent again. Honestly, Grace is relishing in having the evolutionary upper hand for once. He’s put up with so much teasing from Rocky about being leaky, fragile, and stupid, and while it doesn’t really bother him it’ll be nice to have something to tease him back about. He can already picture himself clapping back to a Humans so squishy and weak with a Your species couldn’t even figure out slingshots!

Adrian meets Grace several times, before Grace is healthy enough to meet them in return. Despite light-years of distance between their species, Adrian might have finally met the first other being who appreciates Rocky like they do; or so they hope.

“Uh.” Before I can explain that humans don’t really have anything like that (at least nothing that gets carved into their skin) Sam taps against the barrier.
“Right there, stupid. On Teacher Grace’s arm-limb.”
I look down to see what they are pointing at.
It’s Rocky’s clawprint. The one he left behind when he pulled me to safety after the Adrian fiasco.

The pebbles are too invested in their teacher’s personal life and Grace finally realizes that he’s part of a family. He has a lot of feelings about that.
