    “Ilya, are you deflecting because YOU don’t want to go?” The brown eyes Ilya folded for every time narrowed, flashing from pleading to suspicious in an instant. “C’mon, it would be so nice to just be in real nature for a bit.”

    Okay, fine. Ilya did not want to go. As much as he loved their team, he did not want to share his precious summertime with Shane paddling around a lake like some kind of 1800s fur trader. And frankly, he did not want to find out what constituted “real” nature in Shane’s mind.

    Or: When Shane insists they partake in the annual Centaurs canoe trip, Ilya wants no part in it. Throughout the trip though, Ilya gets to reflect on all the ways he and Shane have grown individually, together, and by being well-loved by their team.

    "It's just dancing, Shane," Hayden jokes. "We're not going to war."

    "You may not remember my wedding day that much, dude, but I do. This is going to be a lot."

    Despite all that, he didn't care. He wants to stand with his friends and teammates and show them, openly and loudly, how much he loves his husband. He wants to share this deeply special part of his life with them in the way he's stood by and watched others do for so many years, still savouring the fact that he really gets to have it all.

    Shane and Ilya are hosting the Centaurs' annual end of season send off party. Between heated food debates, arguing about early playoff exits and a few cups of rum, Shane finds himself thinking about the journey it took to get him here, showing off his love for the world to see.

    He has a lot of feelings about it. He swears he's not an emotional drunk.

    Before he walked to the showers, he looked up at the muted TV that hung in the locker room where Shane would appear any minute, giving boring, polite answers to rabid reporters.

    Right now, clips from the game were playing, highlights of their victory. The TV was on a shot of Shane’s first goal sailing clean into the net, Ilya crashing into his arms afterwards to kiss the side of his helmet. Then it cut to a shot of Rose, Yuna, and David in the crowd. Rose was jumping up and down, spinning to look at the people behind her in the box as she cheered, the Hollander name clear on her back.

    Ilya looked back down. His eyes fell to the jersey Shane had folded moments before, still waiting in a little square on his bench. Pointlessly neat, considering it would be gathered and tossed in with the rest of the other team’s laundry after the game.

    Ilya found himself stuffing it into his bag without a second thought.

    Feelings of jealousy inspire Ilya to wear Shane’s jersey for him for the first time.
