He kicked himself, mind going into overdrive as he saw Sokka’s brow furrow. He’d thought it had been too quiet for him to hear, but maybe he was wrong and Sokka had heard and now knew, and was confused because he was trying to figure out how to let him down gently, and Zuko had just ruined everything-
“I have absolutely no clue what you just said,” Sokka announced after a moment, dropping his sword to his side. “I couldn’t hear you over all the wheezing.”

He knew what this was.
He’d expected this, they all had to some degree, though none had predicted it would happen as soon as a week after. None of them had prepared for it, leaving Zuko alone. Defenseless, one could argue.
But Zuko hadn’t lived this long for no reason, had clawed his way out of ashes and blood to sit upon this cursed throne, and he would defend it with his life, if that was what it took.

Summary
During one of Zuko's middle-of-the-night palace wanderings, he accidentally stumbled upon a secret passage that leads to a cell containing one very much alive Lu Ten.
That was two weeks ago. Iroh and Zuko are delighted, and Sokka is delighted that they're delighted.
Only problem is? Sokka and Lu Ten do not get along.
At all.... Until an assassination attempt comes a little too close to success, leaving Zuko badly injured.
It turns out Sokka and Lu Ten get along pretty well when they're going on a roadtrip across the Fire Nation to hunt down the person who almost killed their precious turtleduck.

Summary
The infirmary is mostly quiet as Sokka enters, looking around with sharp movements trying to find dark hair, pale skin, and a burn scar. Thanks to it being the royal palace infirmary, it wasn’t too difficult though, not with there only being one bed with a patient in. One clad in the elegant reds and golds deserving of the ruler of a nation. If a little rumpled.
“Zuko!” Sokka shouts over the low buzz of sound from the rest of the room's occupants - all seeming to be bodyguards or doctors.
Zuko looks up sharply, and his expression seems to shift through a couple different emotions before settling on a sheepish smile that has Sokka's fear shifting to anger.
He stalks over to Zuko's bedside, as he goes watching Zuko attempt to sit straighter and wince as he does, hand going to his side.
"Sokka, hi." Zuko says, smiling with a slight wince. "How was your journey?"
"Don't do that!" Zuko frowns.
"Don't do what?"
"Don't act like you don't have a fucking stab wound!"
Or
When Sokka arrives back in the firenation, he finds his boyfriend a little more worse for wear

Zuko wakes up the first time it happens to the smell of burning flesh. He at first thinks it’s just a lingering memory, the vestiges of a nightmare he’s had many times, but then he hears the shouts and clanging of metal that accompanies it.
The telltale signs of a fight, right outside his door.
So of course he does the sensible thing and rushes toward the commotion without a second thought, still in his loose bedclothes and bleary-eyed from sleep. He practically falls out of the door, stumbling right into the middle of both the hall and the battle waging within it.
At this point, Zuko's no stranger to attempts on his life. He can handle it.
Or five times Zuko's friends save him from an assassination attempt, and one time they're almost too late.

Summary
The deck is empty.
The spirit is gone and so is the prince. Jee walks, and then runs, to the rail in the hope that the royal brat has just been swept overboard, but there's nothing. Nothing at all.
The Prince is lost. The General is going to be livid. The Fire Lord will ... well, that also won't be good. Between those two, Jee's probably just as dead as his charge probably is.
On the plus side, at least they won't have to go to the South Pole.
Or,
A spirit encounter leaves Zuko transformed into a dragon. It's not as bad as it sounds.
