“Don’t you dare try to be noble right now,” Agatha warns her, eyes flashing. “And don’t try to pretend this isn’t exactly what you want.”
“I’m not saying I don’t want this,” Rio murmurs. “Trust me.” She brushes her hands over her face, trying to clear her head.
“Then what’s the problem?”
Rio exhales. “I don’t know if…”
“If what?” Agatha offers. “If this is healthy? If this is a good idea? If I’m in a state of mind to be making decisions like this right now?” Her lips purse thinly. “Why don’t you leave that up to me and stop pretending like you’re not desperate to have my hands on you?” Her words are like honey pouring straight into Rio’s veins, and embarrassingly spot-on. As if to prove a point, her hand slides down Rio’s thigh, confident and smooth, before fully palming Rio’s crotch through her pants. “Isn’t this what you want?” Rio’s body goes stock-still.
“Is this what you want?” Rio shoots back without thinking.
The storm clouds in Agatha’s eyes darken even more. “I can’t have what I want,” she says, before tightening her grip between Rio’s legs.

Summary
When Rio joined Agatha on the witches' road, she wasn’t scared. If anything, she was cocky. The idea of walking the witches' road with her wife again felt like an adventure—an opportunity to be by Agatha’s side, even if Agatha clearly didn’t want her there. Rio thought it would be fun, familiar, despite the trials ahead. She had convinced herself nothing could touch her.
But when the second trial arrived, everything changed.
Rio found herself standing on the porch of the only home she had ever known—the home she shared with Agatha and their son, Nicholas. The witches’ road was ancient, as old as she was, and it had reached into her mind, plucked her deepest fear from the darkness she refused to acknowledge. It wasn’t a monster or some forgotten villain.
It was a memory.

She knelt down next to the bed and dipped the spoon into the tea. “This is going to taste like grass which I’m sure you love.”
The barb made Rio smile through the pain. Her head lolled over toward Agatha and she could barely open her eyes, her hands gripping hard on her stomach. “This is the end.”
“What?” Agatha blinked, spoon poised just away from Rio’s lips.
Rio shook her head and rolled over on the bed so she was on her side facing Agatha. She stretched her back and groaned. “I failed.” She cleared her throat. “There’s another one - co-coming.” She seemed to choke on something and blood trickled out of the corner of her mouth.

Agatha turns and—this is the part she’ll remember, that feels like time slowed down—she sees Rio standing there, between the tree line and the broken dirt path, feet softly sunken into the mossy ground, and Rio’s eyes are wider than Agatha has ever seen them.
It’s at that moment Agatha knows something is very, very wrong.

Summary
It only takes a moment for Rio to morph her features back into nonchalance, but it’s enough time for Agatha to note down her surprise, causing her to break out into a cruel smirk, “What? Familiar’s got your tongue?”.
She has hundreds, if not millions of things she would like to say to the woman at the end of her blade. But none of them can take precedence over the creeping burn of petals lodged in Rio's throat.

Rio has never loved in moderation, in fact, she’s never even loved before she met Agatha. So there’s no reason why she should be shocked when her lungs start sprouting flowers after their separation.

The Witches’ Road is a circle.
And for a circle, there is no end or beginning. For a circle, the end is the beginning. In that circle, only a coven may enter and only a coven may leave—no witch left behind. Because a coven is a sacred circle of its own.
So it is that the only way to truly leave the Witches’ Road is to break the circle—for all of the coven to pass their trials and survive together.
