“I haven’t really been to a wedding where I’ve, uh… let loose. But, hey,” Dennis shrugged, “maybe I’m doing it wrong.”

“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”

And just like that, the bubble popped.

    “I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.

He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

    ---
Or, Dennis is anxiously headed home for a "wedding" in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the details of which are increasingly fuzzy. Robby's got a medical conference in Omaha that same weekend. So they carpool. Seventeen hours both ways in an enclosed space with no way out except a tuck and roll. This'll go great.

    Summary

Shane broke up with his high school girlfriend before leaving for the NHL. He doesn't think he'll ever talk to her again, but one day just before his second season, she shows up at his apartment. She tells him she's gay, and her parents kicked her out. Obviously, he offers her a place to stay. His parents, the Metros, and the media all make assumptions about their relationship, and they figure... why not let them assume?

He says, “It’ll be cool. Like… a sleepover with friends.”
He says, “What else do you need?”
He does not say, “I think I get it more than I should.”
And that’s how Jessica comes to live with him.

    Pain.

That’s the first thing that registered in Shane’s mind as light returned to his vision.

The next thing he registered was that his right hand was being held in a tight grip.

The third thing he registered was the sound of beeping right next to his head.

He’s also pretty sure he’s in a hospital.

Or.... In which Shane Hollander wakes up in 2026 thinking it's still 2010.

    Summary

When Dallas texts him, I’m flying in Tuesday, getting in at 11:45, Shane thinks of all the things he might do instead, alone. He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.

He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.

Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. He doesn't set foot in Ilya's house outside of Boston. (There is no tuna meltdown.) He stops waiting for Ilya Rozanov to text him back. It's fine, until it isn't.

    Summary

As a straight man, Ilya Rozanov has never had a gay roommate before, but it’s going pretty well. Shane Hollander is kind, silly, and an even bigger hockey nut than Ilya.

So when Shane starts bringing men over, and Ilya begins to want to bash their fucking heads in, Ilya comes to a startling conclusion: He must be homophobic.

    (He’s jealous.)
