During the fiercely passionate little "talk" they were having at Christmas, the two decided to settle their differences at the King In Yellow's ball in the middle of some world that didn't exist. The only catch was that this was a couples only dance.

    But with 70 dollars and Regect's pride on the line, he sure as hell was going to destroy that bug.

What are you doing here?” Derek asked. “I came to see you, of course.” Avery said, and his voice sounded just as Derek expected it would. Mildly high pitched, with a bit of a rasp that made him sound like he could be 12 or 20. “Did you… find me?” Derek asked.

    Basically an alternate universe where Derek survives, and he goes to college with Avery.
