After Colin interrupted her dance with Lord Debling Penelope tried to salvage the situation by making him understand that the idea of Colin having feelings for Penelope was laughable, and it was the truth, they were friends, they would never be more, but then Lord Debling made the question Penelope dreaded the most.
“But would you like it to be more?”
“That is not a possibility.” She replied more to herself than to him.
“I did not asked you if that was a possibility, I asked if you would like it to be.”
Her heart was screaming yes, of course she would like it.
But her brain was asking what use would that be?
Loving Colin had brought her nothing but pain, if she was honest about her feelings not only she would be losing the only chance she would ever have to get married, but she would also doomed herself to see him fall in love and marry someone else, she just couldn’t, her mother was right, safety is the right choice.
So she raised her head and looked at Lord Debling determinedly.
“No my Lord, I do not wish it to be and I assure you I do not have any kind of romantic feelings for Colin Bridgerton, nor I ever will.”
