Katsuki stopped chewing, his fork hovering inches from a piece of wilted lettuce. He stared at her, feeling a sudden regret for ever opening his mouth. Ten minutes ago, she had been a sympathetic listener, but now she looked entirely too amused by his suffering.

He thought he’d been prepared for the realities of a pro hero relationship. The long work days that kept them separated into the wee hours of the morning. The stress and fear of waiting for the verdict after the other lands in the hospital. Learning to cope with only texts and calls whenever one of them was sent away to help somewhere else.
Katsuki hadn’t been ready for the empty apartment he came back to every day. Hadn’t been ready for the meals for one, the shopping for one, the bed for two missing a crucial occupant.
He wasn’t prepared to go home to that empty apartment now, exhausted from the long day and wanting nothing more than to sink into warm arms and fall asleep with fingers tangled in his hair, but having to settle for hugging his pillow.
