It's Christmastime in the vague and undefined lands of Vhartiva, which also might be the name of a city. There in that place lives an unassuming man, a cobbler by trade. He makes his living fixing shoes, seeing people's stories inscribed in their soles when they come to him for repairs. He spends his days wondering if there is something more out there for him. On an unassuming winter's day, he is surprised when he runs into an old friend: a kobold he hasn't seen in some time. They were best friends in their childhood, but their lives went in different directions. Could this chance encounter change all of that in one night? Summary
Five years after the Liberation War, a mission to extract a mole in the ADVENT Remnants goes horribly wrong. With the threat of traitors amongst XCOM's ranks, former operative William Mackenzie is pulled out of retirement. William enters into a world alien to the one he left behind, a world trying to rebuild from the destruction of the Liberation War and wipe away the taint of the Elders. He soon finds himself falling down a rabbit hole of terrorist plots, schemes and conspiracies in a secret war that could end XCOM itself.

Summary
Life in city 31 is unique, to say the least, being the only city to attempt incorporating earth's new inhabitants, brings in opportunity for unexplored interspecies interaction, newly formed cultures, and an impossible number of changes to the already tumultuous life of the post-invasion earth. Yet an equal amount of discrimination and the everpresent feeling of nearing conflict.
Throughout Nilian's life, he has had his share of alien and human bloodshed, now he simply wants to live out his days in this experimental city, contributing to the mixed society's health via his work at one of the leading hospitals.
