Yelena woke up to the feeling of being watched. For a moment, she could not tell where she’d woken up. She kept her breathing the same as she attempted to register exactly where she was, then a cool finger brushed across her cheek, and she relaxed, breathing in Bucky’s comforting scent.
His arm tightened around Yelena, shifting her slightly in her bed. “Are you in pain?” Bucky murmured into the darkness, having registered that she'd awoken. Yelena opened her eyes, meeting his icy blue ones.

The conference room was packed as Bucky slipped in from the hall. Reporters hung over Valentina’s words as she made some promise or another to protect the country using her team, or was it with a nuclear weapon? Ava couldn’t say. She’d stopped listening about two minutes in.
Instead, she tracked the way Yelena seemed to lighten the moment Bucky entered the room. Like a weight lifted off her shoulders, the second that her gaze landed on him.

Bucky’s gaze shifted to her in concern, but she just flashed him a smile, “Milyi, could you get me another one?”
He eyed her knowingly, then flashed a warning glare at Sam as he stood and walked away towards the bar.
Sam rolled his eyes, then turned to Yelena, “You’ve got him wrapped around your finger, you know that?”

Yelena frowned up at him, not replying. Bucky was this close to tugging at his hair in frustration, “Why don’t you believe me?” he murmured.
Yelena supressed a shiver, “Because a part of you does feel that way, whether you think so or not.”
Bucky leaned closer. Close enough to see the slight blush adorning her cheeks. “You don’t know me well enough yet to know that, Lena.” He said, voice low and gravelly, “But if you hang around, you will. And then you’ll see that I like being around you, just because.”
Set in between 'drops of blood on concrete kiss my lips (but you won't)' and 'he is just a man (and so he doesn't)' in a sort of alternate universe than the one I've created.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes, now a part of the New Avengers, struggles with balancing his role whilst also attempting to deal with the trauma he’s collected over the decades.
As Steve and Peggy try to find and rescue the Bucky of their time, Bucky of 2025 - quite literally - fades in and out of existence. Can Yelena and the rest of the Thunderbolts save their friend, or have Captain America and Agent Carter messed everything up?

"If he had been friends with Captain Rogers then maybe he knew the other Avengers and could get her in contact with Clint, but even more than that the pained look on his face at the mention of the Winter Soldier resonated a little too deeply with Yelena’s own desire to leave the past behind her."
Instead of accepting the job to assassinate Clint, Yelena decides to track him down for information about what happened to Natasha, and runs into Bucky on her way. They find out they have more in common than they thought, and navigate their traumas together. Post-Endgame, canon divergence from "Hawkeye" and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier".
