Summary
Blue could almost forget all that had happened last month — the ground shaking beneath her feet in Cabeswater, the dull, expressionless set of Adam’s mouth, the crack through him she’d only gotten a glimpse of. She could almost remember the easy way he’d talked to her before she knew anything at all about Welsh kings, or magic forests, or dreamt ravens. The effect was fleeting, though. There was something in the eyes that refused to be as Blue remembered them, as they’d looked before. A sharpness, or an unanticipated depth, like jumping into murky water and plunging deeper than you thought you would go. It was impossible to tell if he’d changed, or if he’d always been this way, and something had been hiding it before.
---
Goodwill is exchanged; people are humored. Adam and Blue participate in the time-honored art of Making It Awkward. Sweaters and palms are examined. The can of friendship is kicked down the road.

Summary
Nine of Swords, the Hermit, reversed Seven of Wands. Nightmares, loneliness, and giving up.
They might be the Magician and the Greywaren, but when it came to saving the ones they held dear, they were just lost.

Summary
Adam is going to want to know why he’s here, and Ronan won’t have an answer. He’s got four minutes to figure one out, but before his racing, stupid, hateful mind can come up with something that’s not a lie, that’ll still work, the back entrance of the factory opens and Adam strides out.

Summary
Adam had seen women fall down in the streets, writhing, hair matted and eyes wild like Ronan's. His mother used to say it was a rich people's illness, but the girls in the trailer park would get sick too, kept inside for weeks at a time. Everyone in Henrietta assumed it only happened to women, except the summer of Adam's ninth birthday, a boy his age got his first bite.
Without looking up, Adam asked, "Has this happened before?"
Declan sighed. It was an absurd, relieved sigh. "It happens every year."
Something's wrong with Ronan. Adam wants to know what.

Summary
“Well.” Adam shrugged, all casual. “What the hell, right? Not like anyone's coming. It's Valentine's. Might as well.”
Pensive silence, Ronan cocked his head. Wordless, while Adam rocked back and forth. Drummed fingers.
“Might as well.” Ronan said, eyes bright and catching constellations, rose peaked cheeks from brisk winds, sniffling still, eyes creased and underlined in echoes of painted twilight.
All Adam's skin burned.
