“Feofan,” Dottore announced, his voice warm with a delight that never boded well for anyone, “say hello to my newest favorite test subject. This is Kabukimono.” He squeezed the boy’s shoulder fondly. “Of course, you are also one of my favorites. Do not feel slighted. But he is the shiny new toy, you understand. Please get along. The two of you will be seeing a great deal of each other in this lab.”

    OR

Long before they became Harbingers, Feofan and Kabukimono were nobody in particular: a failed businessman and a discarded puppet, both stuck in Dottore’s lab, both determined to be his favorite. Naturally, they hated each other. Naturally, that didn’t last.

“What’s your name?” Dimitri asked, still smiling. He started walking as he did so, expecting the man would know to follow him.

“I’ve got lots of those. Best not to get into it,” he replied vaguely, giving Dimitri a funny sort of smile. Like he wasn’t actually happy at all. Before Dimitri could object, he continued. “And you, kid? Got a name worth sharing?”

“Dimitri,” he said brightly. He should introduce his full title, but… it was nice. Just being talked to without any of the usual stiff, awkward phrases that strangers often used around him. Especially adults.

The man stilled, just briefly, before he nodded. “That’s a nice one. I… knew a Dimitri, once. Kinda looked like you, too, to be honest.”

Or, five times Claude saved Dimitri's life, and one time Dimitri returned the favor.

    Summary

When Columbina opened her eyes, she was no longer in Sandrone's room.

She was so sure she had been reading Sandrone's journal just a moment ago. The last thing she remembered was tears pricking her eyes and exhaustion making her head droop. Now, she is met with an unfamiliar, cold hallway. Even worse, there was someone walking toward her, their sharp heels clinking against the floor.

    ... No.

This wasn't just any hallway, this was the inside of the Tsaritsa's palace. And that figure wasn't just anyone, that was Sandrone.

After Sandrone’s death, Columbina is devastated. But one night, she discovers Sandrone’s old journal, which takes her back in time to the very first entry.

    Summary

Badeni had only himself to blame for this predicament. If he’d never flipped open the cover of Oczy’s book, driven by incredulous curiosity, if he’d never skimmed that first page, and then read it again and again, increasingly unbalanced by the spread of sincere words in an awkward hand, he would never have known what was churning away in that inexplicable man’s head. He’d never have known just how much their meeting had meant.
