Summary
Lily Evans is sick, sick of feeling like an outsider, sick of the pressure to prove she's more than her blood status and sick of herself. She wanted to be good enough to be accepted.
James Potter has been totally infatuated with Lily Evans since he saw her during their first year at Hogwarts. He would love to watch her doing the things that made her Lily like how she would try to make conversation with house elves or comfort homesick first years or would carry a book everywhere. He noticed when she started staring off into the distance more than usual or tapped her fingers around her wrist anxiously. He watched her slowly fade. James has to fix this because isn't that what he does?

“Has something I said bothered you?”
James sets his own book down without even bothering to dog-ear the page. Lily thinks that’s a very apt metaphor for the two of them—he’ll shut a book without care if he loses his place, and she’s got a set of leather bookmarks sitting in a drawer in her room. He’d stolen one from her, a few years ago, but she’s not once seen him use it.
“You said I’m allowed to not like your hair.”
There are some moments that sneak up on you. The profession of James's feelings certainly does so for Lily.

Summary
In June of 1985, Snitch magazine had put together a compilation of photos of James Potter and Sirius Black of the Wimbourne Wasps. The pair were shown hugging post-match, talking animatedly at a black tie gala for the team, arm in arm while out on a shopping trip. There was even one photo of them sipping from the same smoothie, which the magazine declared was conclusive evidence of their sexual relationship. When asked about it in an interview, James and Sirius, professionals that they were, responded by ignoring the interviewer and sharing a long, exaggerated kiss for the camera. They thought it was hilarious. Their spouses took a different view.

He stayed there, thinking about soft curls and a sweet face that he barely caught a glimpse of, until the sun was shining directly through his window and James arrived to help him dress for dinner.
Or, a victorian au in which Remus is a gardener, Sirius is a dramatic rich kid, and they fall in love.

Petunia had said 'freak' and Lily had hissed 'better than this, better than this being my whole fucking world, Tune, do you even see yourself, are you happy--'
And now here was Dudley Vernon Dursley fussing himself to sleep as Lily walked the halls of the Godric's Hollow house. His tiny soft hands with their tiny soft fingernails curled under her chin, the same way Harry's always had.
She passed James, who was gently bouncing his way up the hall the opposite way. "I think he's asleep," James mouthed over Harry's tousled head. His hair was the same mess, his head bent down as he peered at his sleeping son.
Lily stopped where she stood, her nephew heavy on her chest, her husband smiling, her sister buried. "James," she said. "How are we going to do this?"
