    Summary

Xenk has always denied himself the pleasures of the flesh, restraining himself in the name of duty. But as he and Edgin infiltrate a temple of Ilmater, its purpose twisted by some foul magic, he begins to question what purpose restraint truly serves.

When he stirred, Jim knew instantly that it was too early for his Alpha shift.

The low buzz of the Enterprise’s engine was part of their everyday life now, but Jim could decipher it from the rest of the quiet, warm room. He was never the first one awake — or at least; he was not used to not waking up alone. Most mornings, his husband knelt only inches away, meditating on his mat and waiting for him to emerge from his restful sleep. This morning, however, Jim was fortunate enough to have woken before Spock, or at least early enough to catch the small tendrils of sleep left in him.

    “Good morning, Jim.”

Damnit. Of course, Spock was already awake.

“Do you know which goddess this Temple was dedicated to?”

Edgin looks at the doors again, studying the carving in the top, the benevolent woman who looks down over the two men fighting in her honor. “I mean, not off the top of my head, no. I take it you do?”

“Sune,” says Xenk. “It took me a moment to recognize Her symbol, but I believe that is meant to be Her. This place was built by Her worshipers.”

“The goddess of love and beauty, right.” Edgin would make a joke, if he wasn’t so on edge. “So, what do we need to do to get past it?”

The paladin straightens. “There are rituals, known among Sune’s people, to show that you are among the faithful, and demonstrate your dedication to the goddess. I am familiar with them.”

“Great! So, you can show me, we’ll do it, and the doors will open. Sound good?”

“I am afraid the rituals require at least two participants and are considerably more hands-on.” Xenk looks him over. “Specifically, they are more physical.”

It takes a second for it to sink in, from how the other man is looking at him. “I’m sorry, you can’t mean –”

    “Intercourse,” he says. “Yes.”

Shane was fourteen the first time a number felt like safety.

The nutritionist worked out of an office in Kanata, framed certificates, a calm voice, laminated charts with columns. She explained it simply: fuel in, output required, timing of each. She said it was a starting point.

Shane took notes in the margins the way he took notes on everything—completely, past what was required. Yuna had found the nutritionist herself, sat beside him, and took notes too.

    Like mother, like son.

Or: Shane’s system works until it doesn’t; Ilya notices first.

Worf knew that he wore his heart on his sleeve, that it didn’t take a genius to figure him out. He liked it that way. It kept people at a comfortable distance, made them avoid him, fear him. But where others flinched or tiptoed, Riker smiled and teased. Leaned in, not away.
