Catra stepped into the small clearing, eyes adjusting to the sudden shift. The Whispering Woods, for all their twisting, unsteady nature, had led her somewhere. The sky was visible through the trees now, moonlight casting long shadows over the grass.
And across from her—
Someone stood there.
Catra tensed, her body coiled, instincts screaming at her to be ready for anything.
The woman in front of her looked just as startled.
She was tall, standing rigid as if she had been walking only moments before and had been stopped just as abruptly as Catra had. Feathered wings framed her back, poised mid-motion, frozen.
Recognition clicked, sharp and sudden.

Vanders quick hand reaches for her holster, harnessing an old revolver, one of his, no doubt, and brings it up to his narrow icy gaze. The steel barrel had rusted over years of neglect, dust and dirt settled comfortably in every crevice and bolt.
"This?" He states firmly, flicking the cylinder out with practiced ease and eyeing the solitary bullet nestled within it. "This won't solve your problems. It'll just create more of 'em."

She meets Adora’s eyes for what she hopes is the last time, memorises the stormy blue of her irises. “I don’t have to stay and watch it happen.”
“Catra, please,” Adora rises to her knees. She hugs Catra’s bag with one hand and begs, “Stay. I need you.”
“No you don’t,” Catra can tolerate a lot of things, but hearing Adora lie to her hurts the most. She asks Melog to cloak her and Melog listens without complaints. “You never have."
She disappears from Adora’s sight.

Catra always thought that it would be her and Adora ruling the world together, but as Horde Prime’s power grows and Adora chooses to sacrifice her life for everyone else, Catra decides that she will not stand aside and watch the person she loves die. So, she runs away. Summary
Everything seemed fine after Adora released the magic of the Heart out in the world and vanquished Prime out of existence. For a few glorious minutes, Catra thought this might be it. No more evils out there, no more war, not a reason out there for them to be apart from each other.
Then Adora passed out for three days, and woke up with no recollection of anything that happened after she broke She-Ra's sword.
Catra never gets to win. Right?
(Adora loses her memory. Catra believes she hates her again - despite everyone telling that, no, she doesn't. Even Adora herself. Repeatedly.)
