Perdikkas comes into view, stepping closer to blink down at Phainon and Mydei on the ground. “You’re all here?”
Ptolemy scoffs, kicking lightly at the dirt. “Guess who has the extraordinary pleasure of being assigned the babysitting duty to the dumbass trio over here?” He rolls his eyes with a sharp sigh. “Not Peucesta, clearly. Lucky bastard.”
“Don’t lump me in with them,” Hephaestion protests. Ridiculous. Everyone knows who instigates the fights just as often as Phainon and Mydei.
“We don’t need babysitting,” Phainon says at the same time, words muffled as Mydei’s hand smashes his head into the ground, resuming their fight now that Ptolemy is distracted. Phainon almost bites down on the dirt by accident.

Alhaitham didn’t respond right away. He let the question hang between them, let it cool in the space like the last of the tea in his cup. He could lie, and it would be so easy. He’d said it all before— stable work, minimal oversight, no forced collaboration with anyone he didn’t feel like working with. A simple life of reading and research. He’d even convinced himself, once.
But Cyno wasn’t just asking to hear his answer, he was watching for how Alhaitham might answer.

He turns to Mydei, letting a gentle smile curve on his lips. Mydei’s eyes narrow to slits.
“Hello there,” Phainon greets softly. He crouches down, inching closer. Mydei doesn’t budge, only tenses like a tightly coiled spring. “My name is Phainon. You’re Mydeimos, right?”
Mydei doesn’t respond, lips pressed tightly shut. Phainon’s smile wavers, chest squeezing tight.
“No one’s going to hurt you here,” he murmurs, extending his arm out. Mydei growls. Fear flashes through his eyes for a fleeting second, but it’s enough to have Phainon freezing in place, breath catching in his throat.
(A mishap at the Abyss of Fate leaves Mydei a child whose only memories are of the Sea of Souls.)

“You must think I’m vain.” He says, his words cutting through the stillness of the room.
Alhaitham considers, and then lowers his book. He attempts to glance down at the other, but only sees the whiteness of Cyno’s hair.

Phainon is a student down on his luck, lacking relative direction in life, and, after failing a test, he undergoes a series of lucky (or unlucky) events which land him in an underground fight club in which he lays eyes on the most beautiful person he's ever seen.
The sentence seemed to sober the crowd slightly, voices hushing slightly and all eyes turning to the ring. Phainon could definitely understand why. The man who stepped onto the ring was magnetic. He commanded a cold ferocity which seemed to silence the room around man. Crimson rivulets of ink were embedded in his perfectly tanned skin, toned arms barely constrained by golden bands, accentuated by a golden earring, dangling alongside a neat red-tipped braid which rested gently upon the man's clavicle.

In an attempt to help his classmate, he steps in and gets involved in the situation at hand. Suddenly, a boy rumored to be the student council member intervenes to resolve the situation. Alhaitham soon discovers that he is drawn to Cyno, a third-year student who also happens to be his senior in high school. Consequences bring them together more frequently, and finally Alhaitham unknowingly falls for Cyno.
