Floodgates meant to stay shut are broken open. The terror and fear that had been held back behind them rush out and drown Vash's heart.
(If Vash were able to see himself from the outside, from the point of view that Meryl and Wolfwood have, he would see the pupils of his eyes shrink down to pinpricks. He would see his face go pale, his breathing become labored. He would see the sweat that starts dripping down the sides of his face and neck, and soaks the high collar of his coat.
He would see the way he instinctively reaches for his gun.)

Summary
They always come and get him, no matter how tired he is, no matter how long it takes to rouse him. He understands, and never begrudges them for it. The Plants are important, and Vash is an important part of fixing them.
But sometimes, treacherously, he wishes they would try to handle the problem on their own, that they would let him sleep.
Healing a Plant, for Vash, means taking its pain away. But that pain has to go somewhere, and he is the only Plant who is able to take it.

Summary
Vash falls ill with a strange, unfamiliar sickness while on the road and Wolfwood gets a crash-course in Plant biology.
Vash realizes, in retrospect, he really should have seen it coming.
It starts with a fever.

“Hurts,” Vash gasped. “Why does it hurt?”
The priest took Vash’s hand from where it dug into his side and gripped it tight, like he was trying to steady him. Hold him together. It made Vash shiver.
“Have you ever been sick like this before?”
“I don’t think so,” Vash groaned.
Wolfwood rolled towards him then, touching his sweat-damp hair and cheek and the scars across his shoulders, as if he could feel out his ailment by hand alone. It made Vash’s body light up like a star, like the fission of energy from a Plant, forcing him to curl in on himself—and then it struck him.
He had been sick like this, only once before.
