A MDZS/Valdemar crossover for the April 2026 challenge (unlikely pairings)

    …….

A white horse walks into the Burial Mounds and calls Wei Wuxian Chosen. He tells her she’s made a mistake. She says Companions don’t make mistakes.

When the Sects finally come for his head, this horse-yao offers him a way to save himself and the Wen refugees. It just requires leaving everything he knows and everyone else he loves behind.

Wei Wuxian has never been very good at taking the easy path. He's far better at attempting the impossible. Admittedly, with mixed results.

    ……

Sometimes it feels like Vanyel is fighting this whole damned war alone. He’s holding the borders together with power that is slowly burning him out. The war is never ending. His control is slipping. And there's no one else who can do what he does…

…until a newly Chosen trainee is dropped on him by a Companion that went further afield than any others dared. He is nothing like what Valdemar expects a Herald to be—foreign, sharp-tongued, and wielding a power that rivals Vanyel’s own. But he might be exactly what Valdemar needs. What Vanyel needs—if he doesn’t strangle him first.

“Hanguang-jun, do you know him?” Lan Jingyi asked, breaking the silence.

Lan Wangji’s eyes flitted easily away from Wei Wuxian to the junior, before giving a slight shake of his head.

    Summary

The wind was awfully cold for summer— sharp, biting, strong enough to rock the little boat until it creaked like a dying thing. Strange, Wei Wuxian thought distantly, watching the black water lap against the hull. But then again, what was not strange anymore?

It had been the worst monsoon anyone could remember— an unending cycle of storms that had turned their land into a grave of drowned things. The Yangtze had never been a gentle river, but it had never been this cruel either. It had moods: everyone with a brain knew so. Yet, this was no longer temper alone. This was rage, overtaken and unrelenting, without an end in sight.

It did not surprise him when the elders gathered beneath the flooded pavilions and declared that the river god must be appeased— that someone must be offered to still its wrath. This barbaric act of giving a God human brides felt like an inevitability: and, for such thoughts, Wei Wuxian stood before they could call for volunteers. His voice almost sounded calm, though his hands had been trembling behind his back in despair.

Better him than one of them. Always him, rather than them.

    Or

Wei Wuxian had never expected to have a dragon for a groom.

    Summary

The betrothal letter arrived at Lotus Pier in the spring, not long after Wei Wuxian had returned from the Cloud Recesses. It was written in a clean, practiced hand and signed by Acting Sect Leader Lan Qiren, speaking on behalf of his youngest nephew. It declared the union a love match— not unusual for the Lans, and unmistakably sincere. Wei Wuxian accepted without hesitation. Uncle Jiang, though clearly torn, hadn’t the heart to deny him that kind of happiness. And so, married into the Lan he was.

The ceremony was long behind him now, and yet its beauty lingered— like warmth on skin long after the sun has set.

Wei Wuxian could still feel it: the heavy red of the wedding robes, the hush of sacred vows exchanged, the tremble in his fingers when the forehead ribbon had been tied around his wrist. Joy clung to him, not like thunder or fire, but like smoke— soft, fragrant, inescapable.

    Sandalwood.

    Or

Wei Wuxian loses his virginity with a very hands-on audience.

    Summary

Lan Sizhui did not wish for his father to be bound by eternal mourning— no, such a desire would be both horrendously selfish and terribly unfilial. Yet, he had never once conceived of his father's grief as something with an end, something that could be cast aside. The very notion of his mother's memory fading away, left only to the bad-mouther's and the tides of time, was unthinkable.

Where, then, had those years gone? The years in which his precious ā-die had taught him to play inquiry, the music reverberating within the Jingshi as they called upon a spirit so deeply cherished they could not bear to remain silent?

To cease mourning was one matter; an understandable one, perhaps, though still difficult to stomach. But to bring another omega into the household, to allow someone else to occupy the space reserved only to his father’s rightful spouse— to Lan Sizhui’s niáng-qīn? That, he could not tolerate.

Upon the honor of his mother’s undying soul, Lan Sizhui swore it: his father would not take a second wife. He would simply not allow such a shameless transgression!

He was not getting a stepmother! Not in this life!
