He tells himself she’s not responsible for what the other Pike showed him, for what the future will hold. He tells himself she can’t help what didn’t happen. What won’t happen, as long as he stays true.
He tells himself she’s here, she’s safe, she’s not broken or imprisoned or tortured or just plain gone. He tells himself she’s still alive.

Stede would catch a flash of black leather and silvered hair but by the time he opened his mouth to hail or raised a hand, Ed was gone again. They were never alone together.
In front of the others, Ed was polite. Ed was correct. Ed was even kind, in a distant sort of way. He greeted Stede on the quarterdeck with good morning and dismissed him with good night.
He smiled. He spoke evenly and calmly.
Stede thought if it kept up even one more hour, he was going to stab someone.

Waking up after the events of the trial, Ser Duncan the Tall is more confused than ever. Prince Baelor is completely uninjured and nobody seems to remember what has happened but him.
Nor does it explain the reaction upon the discovery of Dunk wounded within Ashford castle, mistaken for a mistreated servant of the household. The dragon princes of the realm do not seem to appreciate such treatment and immediately take Dunk under their wing, much to the hedge knight’s bewilderment.

What if the book merchant was not the first disguise Holmes used to get close to Watson? What if he returned to London months earlier and found he could not stay away from him? Watson, whose face has grown sunken and weary in these three years, and Holmes who, as a result, finds himself desperately curious to understand why.
