“Will you stay with me?” Anakin’s voice was full of hope and his face was expectant.
Qui-Gon sighed, knowing the boy was used to more attention. “I’m afraid I cannot. I have to make preparations for the return to Naboo tomorrow morning.” Before Anakin had time for his expression to fall, Qui-Gon continued, “I am not allowed to teach you, but allow me to bestow upon you some wisdom.” Anakin’s face went from disappointed to eager, excited to learn. “The Force is in all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us: it binds the galaxy together. Even if I am not physically with you, you can always find me in the Force. The same can be said for your mother.” He finished with a kind smile.

A masterpiece. Realistic and subtle yet so powerful. I really appreciated the unapologetic depiction of abuse with the overall message of recovery. Thorin is not evil, but he is very flawed and abusive. Bilbo overcomes being "small" and "defenseless" by knowing when to play up those perceptions for his own safety and when to stand up for himself, and most importantly by accepting help.
Whether it be a relationship or something else, everyone has experienced a dream come true turned into a nightmare and this story captures the devastation and fallout of that perfectly.
"Though it’s possible no one else has ever loved him so well, it is certain no one else has ever loved him so terribly." There were many quotes that stood out to me but this one summed everything up well. Despite it all, this is a love story; despite it all, there was love. Even if the love was terrible and even if it was not enough, it was still there and it always will be. That is both terrible and beautiful. That is love.

As far as Boromir goes, this fic is an excellent character study. The relationship itself is so realistically depicted with all characters having flaws and dealing with misunderstandings and cultural differences, and yet they care for each other, love each other, and forgive each other. This fic is full of depth and wisdom and was very healing to read.

“I get that you're difficult by nature,” Akuna says, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor of Cal's cell next to him like they're not interrogator and prisoner, but just casual acquaintances hanging out. He cracks open his own bottle of water and takes a sip, then continues, “or Lank wouldn't be losing more of his hair trying to break you. But when I tell you to drink, you gotta drink, Kestis.”
Cal snorts. “What,” he croaks, “I have to get better so you can be the one to break me instead?”
Akuna pauses for a moment, then shrugs and nods. “Pretty much.”
