Poseidon has, at this point, broken just about every rule in the book. If his younger brother were just a little more observant, he would be in untold amounts of trouble. It's just that if any traits of Poseidon's can be said to be admirable, it's that he is a very devoted father. Yes, he has countless children by countless different women (and men, too). But every single one of those countless children is his, wholly and completely, forever. So when little Percy Jackson is born, Poseidon's first child in decades, the mighty king of the seas finds himself absolutely smitten with this tiny newborn demigod. He knows the rules, knows the risks. He just… he can't bring himself to leave this time.
So, he doesn't. He stays.

Summary
The second he heard the prayer, and the little offering of orange slices, he knew the child was his brothers son. A child that shouldn't exist. He was stunned. For a moment, all he knew was rage, and then he heard the prayer,
King Zeus, please give me the frame of mind to pass judgment fairly instead of acting with my fists first.
It was worded like a young child. It wasn't what his prayers were about, in this day in age, when he got them. It gave him pause.

In one universe, the Gods were blessed with children and never had to go without, using them as cannon fodder or simply taking their very presence for granted.
In the other, the gods don't have such a blessing. Instead, having been cursed by Kronos for all their children to die before they can get to know them, before they can breathe- only a few surviving long enough to ascend to godhood. These Gods don't take their few surviving children for granted or send them on dangerous, life threatening quests. Surely they won't mind a few more?

"Stop." Poseidon can't tell whose voice uttered that plea, but it feels raw in a way that is too vulnerable for a god to relate to. And yet, as he watches his son literally being crushed by the sky, there is nothing more he can ask for.
Percy blinks once. Slow. Deliberate. His eyes stay green. Steady. Stubborn.
He had once told Percy that the sea does not like to be contained. Right now, in this moment, Poseidon feels as if he is looking into the very heart of the ocean and its tide is refusing to break.
