Danny Fenton’s wet cold dead body was so heavy in Lancer’s single cradling arm.
“Who are you?” Lancer asked very simply.
And Danny, arms still raised high, let out a sigh deep enough to deflate his shoulders. Whatever light was in his eyes went dull, resigned to an acceptance Lancer could not in the moment understand.
“I am your worst student,” Danny answered. And he lowered one arm exclusively to point. “And THAT is the dead body of my ghost clone.”

Alone on the farthest outskirts of Amity Park, Danny Fenton and Edward Lancer bury the dead body of Danny's clone. It is long and tedious work, and Danny can't dodge Lancer's questions forever. Surely it's only fair of Lancer to demand to know what he has been pulled into. Surely Danny could use someone on his side, now that his evenings are spent burying his clones.

More tests are in order, but they’ll need Phantom’s cooperation to perform them. Fortunately, Jack has thought of the perfect incentive: in exchange for the ghost boy’s help with their research, the Fentons will help him find and reconnect with his living family, which he clearly misses!
Their daughter enthusiastically supports this idea. Their son is less enthused.

That is a core, lying bright yet weak and vulnerable in a messy pool of ectoplasm (that must have been their body, fuck fuck fuck) - the literal embodiment of a ghost’s being. A core is basically equivalent to a soul. And his parents are right here, standing over it with gleaming scalpels and grins of delight - as if they hadn’t just stripped a person of their entire body, as if they aren’t about to dissect and pull into pieces the most intimate part of their very being-
