Summary
I met Paul during my second year in Paris. The day I met him, I had just been turned out of my room, with no money to my name and nowhere to settle my easel. I did not owe an egregious amount of money — only a few dozens of francs, but the motel-keeping Parisians do not like debts, and they have this rather funny quality that you would only expect from the horrible breed that is French people; they smell poverty like the plague, and they simply do not seem to have the shame or empathy to be the even slightest bit decent about it.

His shoulder socket pops. The feeling in his arm tingles out to nothing.
“Mary,” He says. “Your name is Mary, like your mother. And you are my daughter. Do you hear me? You’re my daughter,” he says, and Paul nods, and he nods, because he knows, he knows, because his body will change, and then he’ll never stop knowing.

Ever since Paul had told him, John had been hanging around at all hours, asking Paul to marry him, promising they would get a flat together, swearing up and down that he was going to be there for anything Paul needed, even as Paul told him over and over to piss off and leave him alone. How could a bloke think with so much nagging? Even though everyone expected him to go through with it, because it was the thing you did when you were pregnant and unmarried and the supposed father was there.
Paul doesn’t care that he’s pregnant, he wants John to leave him alone - but John just can’t do it.
