Summary
"Dream," Calliope whispers, her face drawn with the same shock the Endless feels.
The man's name ricochets off of the modest apartment walls. The singular word threatening in its utterance to tear them all apart.
He watches the moment register on Hob Gadling's face.
"Dream?” the name falls in dreaded repetition from the mortal’s lips, his eyes grow wide with understanding.
"You know each other?"

Summary
The Stranger hesitates, and does something Hob would not have believed possible. He stammers. “I- I do not remember. I came to and was being pursued.”
Hob notices the older man approaching, but is shocked as his voice rings out, addressing them both, “My dear boy, I am so glad we have found you.” He observes the situation warily; the only reaction from his friend is subtle, the smallest recoil.
“Who exactly are you?” Hob asks the man.
“Why, I’m Paul McGuire, and I can’t thank you enough,” the man looks at Hob’s ID badge, “Dr. Gadling, for finding my nephew.”
Hob’s eyes narrow, as he flatly asks, “Your nephew?”

Hob’s life is forever changed when his Stranger literally stumbles back into his life, amnestic and hunted, and he must use the skills gathered over an immortal life to evade their pursuers. They soon realize that bits of memory are coming back to Hob’s Stranger, through the power of literature. They are slower, however, to recognize that the most important story to explore may be their own.

When Hob meets Agnes Nutter in the year 1600, she tells him these three things:
Steareth clear of assuming friendship, even though thou dost feel assured of it.
When thou arrivest at the horse with a carriage of iron pulled by none, thou shall waite in vain, but do not give up hope, for dreams will come to you when they are free.
And lastly, a duck is more that it appeareth.How is that supposed to make any sense?
Or alternatively: Dream is not the only encounter Hob has in a tavern (or around one).
