He gets bitten three days after Ellie’s tattoo while hauling an infected off of a trainee, a 17 year old named Clara who reminds him of Ellie with her sass and her smile, even though she’s a good half a foot taller than his little slip of a girl. She’s a good kid, has a solid head on her shoulders, but she’s still learning, and even with the trainees paired off with an adult, shit happens.

The look Joel gives him is not dissimilar to the one he got whenever his big brother picked him up drunk from parties in highschool.
“Alright,” he says, hands up in surrender, “no bear baiting with your kid. Got it. We’ll start with mountain lions or something, work her up to it.”
“Tommy,” Joel says, a clear warning.

“He brought food,” Joel responds, holding up a container before he puts it in the fridge.
“He’s still here,” she continues, and Joel just gives her a bemused little smile.
“Is he not meant to be?”
It’s said as a joke, but she barely resists the urge to frown. This is their house now. She doesn’t like the idea of Tommy just…existing inside it, especially when she’s not around.
Too much time for talking and catching up that way.
Too much time for letting Joel remember better days with a better kid.

When Joel calls his name and comes jogging towards him in Jackson, pulling him into a hug as fierce, as joyful as the ones he got when he was back on leave during his army days, he thinks, Is that all it took? I just needed to leave him alone to let him heal? I could’ve just fucking ditched him and then gone back? It’s a painful thought, that his own attempt at support just hindered Joel’s healing, but it’s a giddy one, too, the idea of his brother back with him.
Then he sees Joel catch a kid who almost falls off of her horse when she dismounts, the motion as easy and thoughtless as if he were-
Oh, he thinks, when he sees the way the girl looks at Joel, all sass and no regard, clearly not afraid of him in the slightest, the way she uses his personal space as her own without a second thought. Oh, you paternal fucker.

“Meet Tara, our latest resident,” he says to them before turning to the woman. “This is my brother, Joel, and my niece, Ellie,” he says, and her already-limited reserve of politeness is lost for a moment behind the way she feels mildly stunned by her casual inclusion as his niece in the introduction.
Thankfully, adults tend to look only at adults first, so she has a moment to recover before-
-but no, Tara is looking at her, only at her, with an intensity that makes her feel uneasy. Immediately she presses a bit tighter to Joel, who looks down at her before looking back up to Tara, frowning a bit. He shifts Ellie a bit, getting her just slightly more behind him before he extends his hand, breaking Tara’s unnerving stare with a blink as she registers it in her field of vision.
“A pleasure,” he says, and Tara fumbles for a moment before she takes it, even as her gaze flits back to Ellie briefly.

Summary
Rough cotton of Geralt’s shirt scratches his burn like sandpaper, the heat of the body warming it into prickles of pain, but Jaskier only closes his eyes, willing his body to calm down. Another pair of hands encircles his chest, and he feels almost feverish skin over his own, chaos melting into his muscles, mending the wounds.
It’s useless, he knows, the burns already healed into jagged, uneven pieces, but the ache recedes, leaving exhaustion thrumming through the body.

Summary
None of it is Geralt’s fault, after all; he’s a Witcher, trained and raised to do nothing but kill for coin. Blood stains his hands and swords and runs in streams behind him; there’s no denying that. It was Jaskier who’d been stupid enough to think maybe there was more to him than that and was still stupid enough to try and believe that still.
But who is Jaskier without Geralt? Trailing after him all that time, tripping him up at every turn and glorifying his victories shot him to fame, and then after Geralt left, Jaskier wrote songs about him still, and those were successful too. Geralt’s his muse, and Jaskier is his bard, and that’s how it is.

Jaskier has a lot of feelings regarding Geralt. The path to healing is a slow progress, but they start to take some small steps in the right direction.
