    They are all called to enter the room that has been delegated to this event, they move in the most orderly manner Wei Wuxian has ever seen them move. That is how much they respect the Lan sect— or how much they fear them.
     
    When he is escorted to the middle of the room, the cultivators part in front of him, going to their own seats, leaving him there, with two Lan disciples at his sides. Wei Wuxian bows to show his respect to Hanguang-jun, who is seated on the elevated seat that he makes look like a throne.

    “Approach,” Hanguang-jun says. His voice is firm and authoritative, the voice of a leader, a commander.

    Wei Wuxian obeys.

     

    In which Wei Wuxian figures out quickly that he isn't meant to be a hostage, but he doesn't quite know how to deal with the fact that he is being treated like an esteemed guest. He isn't complaining though.

    It is well-known that the resources offered by the great clans simply cannot be matched by smaller sects. The greater clans have the most renowned techniques and the best teachers. They have built their reputations over centuries, striving to be the best of the best. It is these clans that most young cultivators aspire to join, and so, they have their pick of recruits and are free to pick the best of the best. To anyone in the cultivation world, it is unquestionable that the great clans reign supreme.

     

     It is, thus, quite understandable that even Wen Ruohan— a man largely known for being arrogant and unflappable— looks surprised at the announcement that the first place in the archery tournament has been won by the Head Disciple of the Tingshan He sect.
    Or, Wei Wuxian is raised in Tingshan He. Some things change. Some do not.

    Summary

    Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had been on a simple trip when they had heard about people going missing in the town they stopped at. During the course of the investigation, they had realized that the culprits had mistakenly formed a time travel array. Somehow, the ensuing fight had resulted in them winding up in the array just as it was activated on its own.

    Or, 3 potential points in the past wangxian could have landed at during the war and the 1 time they landed even earlier
