“Oh,” Zuko said, smiling softly as he recognized the label. “Junmai daiginjo, my favourite."
"Of course.” You moved to sit next to him, wondering why it felt like such an immense deal. You had sat next to him countless times. Upon Appa’s back, the wind rushing through his hair like a thousand fingers. Pressed into his side on low logs situated around a blazing fire. Spirits, you’d even slept beside him and woken up your face pressed to his shoulder.
But that was years ago, during a lifetime where his hair wasn’t to his waist and the world was much scarier, but simpler in its directives.
“That’s why I bought it.”

"Were you acting back then too?" Sokka asked, resting against the platform. One of Zuko's guards shot him a look of anger and disbelief, but Zuko shook his head discreetly. "What even happened between you two?" Sokka continued.
The flash of her robes caught his eye and Zuko turned back to look at her. She was smiling sweetly at another noble who Zuko had marked as difficult, with Aang by her side nodding along to the man's words. She felt his eyes on her and looked back to him, her gaze curious. Zuko's heart stumbled across a beat, and he fought the urge to rush to her. To take her in his arms and away from here. Zuko swallowed and turned back to look at Sokka.
"I don't know. After the war, things changed. I thought they did for all of us." Zuko murmured.
"Yeah, they did. But we got to choose that change, Zuko."

“…Right,” he managed, but it didn’t sound like him. Not really.
“So what? You just want to throw me aside to get with some other guy?”
The words escaped Sokka before he could process what he was saying. Zuko’s face transformed from an apologetic one to an extremely shocked one to instantly pissed-off in a way that made Sokka’s stomach drop.
“What the fuck are you saying, Sokka?” he whisper-yelled, still keeping his voice down for the rest of the group.
Sokka didn’t know what he was saying. He’d consider himself pretty easy-going, honestly. He didn’t get like this. He didn’t do jealousy, didn’t spiral, didn’t-
Except apparently he did. He wanted to fix it. He wanted to take it back and say yeah, of course, it’s fine, we’re friends, whatever would smooth the whole thing over and get Zuko to stop looking like he was about to light him on fire.
But the words didn’t come.
