Aye's mouth twists like he's trying not to smile, and Akk doesn't think he's won this argument, but he's won… something.
"Fair point. I still don't agree with the practice, though. There's no way to ensure the introduced plants won't spread and turn invasive."
"You never know. They could all fail to establish."
"Seeds might still disperse somewhere they could establish."
Akk lifts a hand and shakes his head. "This argument is going in circles."
"I thought we were having fun," Aye says, taking a sip from his beer. "At least I was. I like a heated debate."
The word heated seems to crawl along Akk's skin, leaving behind it a hot, prickling sensation. Elegantly, he says, "Uh." Aye grins at him, his eyes twinkling in a way that makes Akk want to get out of his seat and run away.
Is he being flirted with?
Akk, a grad student studying fire ecology, meets a fellow grad student studying post-fire stream discharge and nutrient cycling working on the same site.
