Four weeks ago, he had dragged Maverick's ass out of the fire that Mav and Admiral Cain had so carefully built on the test sight. Mav would have gotten his wings clipped and forced to retirement if Ice would have not gotten involved. There was one place Ice knew that his husband was needed and he pulled every string, called in every favour and he had been even close to begging but he got Mav onto North Island to teach. There was no one better than his husband to prepare lieutenants, there was nothing Mav would not do to get lieutenants ready, make them good and hopefully get them all back alive.
