Summary
“Miya Atsumu,” drawls a voice Atsumu’s heard once or twice or twenty times whilst watching post-match interviews. He stops abruptly in the doorway and follows the voice to a face that plagues his social media feeds and the pages of Volleyball Monthly, a face that’s frustratingly better-looking in person without the lines of an Olympic net between them spoiling the view. “The benchwarmers get prettier by the season.”
Atsumu tucks his hands into his sweatpants pockets, straightens out his shoulders, and narrows his eyes. He’s done his homework for this moment, finessed information out of Kageyama and Hinata, and spent more than a few collective hours on the CA San Juan player profile webpage.
“Oikawa Tooru,” he says slowly. “Surprised they let a scrub that couldn’t make it to nationals in here. Didn’t think the barrel was so empty they’d hafta start scrapin’ it already. Onigashira musta been busy, huh?”

In which Oikawa is 41 and ready to retire. He's at the top of his game and ready to find a new challenge. Turns out his new challenge is pretty familiar. It's high school, round 2.
It culminates three weeks after he woke up as a 16 year old, the coach asking him not to change for practice and instead go home. So Tooru does, he walks home alone.Laying in bed he wonders if he will ever find satisfaction in life. He almost feels as if Iwaizumi truly cursed him the first time around the night they had lost to Karasuno. The night Tooru had cracked open his ribs, pulled out his heart and laid out how grateful he was to everyone on the team for all their effort, for their perseverance, for their dedication and for their trust in him.

The level of maturity that comes from Izayas fics is still not met by anyone else.It's like they've experienced all of this and as much as I love whimsy and a bit of romanticism,the dynamics they write for their characters is so grounded and real and I just appreciate that💓💓

In fact, compared to Kageyama, who’s over a head taller and sculpted with pretty eyes and glossy hair that does not stick up every which way, he just looks a little normal. Normal with electric hair.

The doorbell interrupts him mid-sentence and Oikawa whips his head in the direction of the offending sound.
Someone should tell Oikawa that this is only the first of a series of unfortunate events.
