    It felt like someone had just dumped a bucket of ice-cold water on him, and laughed in his face.

    Why would the universe be so cruel?

    There was nothing left of his saviour in front of him.

    Those beautiful gray eyes, stars dipped in silver, the light that shone in the darkests of nights, gone, obscured instead by a dark-tinted mask. That warm smile that he had loved oh so dearly no longer greeted him when he stepped into view, replaced by a painfully neutral thin line.

    Perhaps one would hope for any sign of recognition. A nod, a glance, or even a hug. Anything. Anything would suffice.

    But Ardashir was no fool.
