Andy twists in her seat to glare backward, but surprisingly she’s not looking at Nile; she’s looking at Nicky.
“This is your fault,” she tells him.
Nicky blinks placidly, dried blood still spattered on his face. “I have done nothing.”
“You know what you did,” Andy says. “You’re contagious.” She points at Nile. “If you start saying everything happens for a reason, I'm not letting you speak to Nicky anymore. I’m not gonna have two of you giving me lectures about some higher calling.”

Summary
Yusuf translates medical texts for Niccolò from Greek and Persian into Arabic, and Niccolò spots the substratum of the ideas of the classical authors that he had once believed the basis of his own civilisation that he would go to the sword to defend, translated and passed down and sewn into a no longer foreign script. There are words Yusuf does not know how to translate. They will never, ever know all of the words. The prospect is thrilling.

Summary
Nicolò should set up the rifle right now, make the shot, and be out of the country by lunchtime. He shouldn’t care that Joe’s eyes are a warm, deep brown, or that when he smiles the entire room lights up around him. Nico has killed beautiful people before, many of them, without blinking.
Instead he makes a monumentally stupid decision.
"My bad pickup line worked on you,” Joe says later at dinner. “I saw your sneer and I thought, oh, I must get that man to agree to a date with me.”
Nico snorts. “And despite my better judgement, here we are.”
“Oh,” Joe says, and over to touch Nico’s fingers. “I think your judgement was quite good, don’t you?”
Or: Nico has a job, and that job is Joe. He just can't for the life of him figure out why anyone would want an unassuming museum curator and art restorer dead.

“Imagine,” Booker says, his voice low. “Just for a moment, that Nicky is dying.”
