Wei Wuxian shook him gently, feeling like an actor reading from a script. “Jiang Cheng, you need to wake up so you can eat.”
“Fuck off.”
“If you don’t get up and eat, you won’t be strong enough for a new core.”
Jiang Cheng went stiff beneath his hand.
“That’s right,” he said, feeling dread pool in his stomach. “I said ‘new core.’”
He laboriously pushed himself upright. The look of hope on his face was painful. “There’s a way?”

When he had twice emptied his bowl, he turned his focus onto Wei Wuxian. His eyes were fierce, expectant, piercing.
It would be easier, to keep to the script. For a moment Wei Wuxian wavered in his resolve, but of all the names he deserved, coward was not among them.

Someone comes to Yilling in the red twilight.
He shuffles, too much like a walking corpse. The setting sun, red from war-fires, paints the death pale of his face fever-flushed. But he breathes. He smiles. He approaches.
Cao Guanyu sells steamed dumplings out of a small stand in the marketplace. He has for the past five years, and business was good for a while. Still is good, for now. The Wens control Yilling and it’s unlikely that the Sunshot Campaign will go for the territory, but anything’s possible. For someone like Cao Guanyu, war means no longer making plans for the future. Any moment someone powerful with a sword could throw his life into chaos.
The stranger approaching his stand does not carry a sword, but that is the same moment where Cao Guanyu adjusts his worldview. Swords don’t matter; it’s just power.Wei Wuxian's first meal outside of Burial Mounds.

The Killing Chord strikes Jingyi’s appointed boulder. It cracks that in half, too.
Not half a second after Lan Yuan follows Jingyi into the crevice, the yaoguai strikes the stone, talons scrabbling at the crevice, beak pecking at the entrance they’ve made themselves. A red, furious, glowing eye peers in after them, and Lan Yuan stumbles back blindly, vaguely downwards. He’s staring at the entrance, at the clear and present danger. Neither of them are looking backward.
In hindsight, it’s the worst mistake they make all day.
Wei Ying has spent years sealed under a mountain. It's just his luck that the kids who break him out of it are Lans.
