Summary
“Long story short, your kid is too damn smart," Buck began. "Seriously, Eddie, maybe you need to pull him out of that fancy school and send him back to public school. Dumb him down a bit so he’s easier to handle.”
Buck’s words became so tangled in his anxiety that he couldn’t really process what he was saying. “What the hell are you talking about? Is Chris okay? Is he in trouble?”
“He’s fine. Safe and sound, happy as a clam, but I’d say he is definitely in trouble.”
...
In which Eddie's parents hate Buck, and Christopher is too damn clever.

Summary
Once Buck opens the door to the intruder of his date, he finds that it is no intruder at all. This boy has never once intruded anything. He’s as welcome here as though he’s a resident in the loft and not just inside the crevice of Buck’s heart.
“Christopher,” he breathes out, peeking his head out of the door to scan the hallway. “Are you alone?”
Chris doesn't answer at first. Buck takes the boy in, feeling an odd sense of deja vu. Notices that the inches he’s grown since he’d last turned up on his doorstep like this have nothing on the young, pained look on his face. If Buck squinted, he could pass for the same ten-year-old who’d run to him all those years ago after shattering a salad bowl.
But the face he bears now… A salad bowl isn’t going to cut it.

“LA Dispatch to Engine 118, be advised–”
Eddie’s head snaps up.
Maddie. Dispatch cadence – clean, clipped, controlled.
Chimney’s eyes flick to the radio, then to Eddie, before he answers.
“118, go ahead.”
Maddie continues, steady as a metronome.
“We have a reported MVC on the Fletcher Drive Bridge, repeat: multiple-vehicle collision. Units en route have visual confirmation of two cars at the scene.”
Eddie’s pulse stutters. He leans forward without meaning to, the seatbelt tugging tight across his chest.
Maddie keeps going, all professionalism, no tremor, until she hits the words that break.
“One of the vehicles is… a Jeep that went over the railing into the water.”

Summary
Eddie’s snapped back to the present by a thunderous cackle and a subsequent stupefied splutter. Theo’s just blown flour right into Buck’s face.
Eddie’s grin only grows when he sees Christopher slap a palm over his mouth, sniggering at Buck’s expense.
“Morning, gang,” he greets, keen to jump into the mayhem.
Buck pivots abruptly and drops the whisk with a clank. Eddie thinks he’d be raising two hands in surrender if not for them being occupied with gathering Theo up in both arms, powdered face fish-mouthing as he registers Eddie’s presence.
Theo’s eyes widen comically. “Teddy!” he screeches, immediately making grabby hands.
“Shit,” Buck gripes.
“Swear jar,” Chris contributes smugly, tilting the crown of his head back into Eddie’s sternum as he squeezes his teenager’s shoulders and drops a kiss to his forehead. “Happy birthday, Dad.”

Summary
Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.
But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”
—you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting—
So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.

“How’d you know what to get?”
“What?”
“The —” Eddie gestures, vaguely, at the coffee table, at the now-gone Taco Bell, at the plates Buck has already cleaned up. “The food. All of it.”
Buck shrugs.
“I just had a feeling.”
“You always have a feeling.”
“Lucky guess.”

Summary
Dennis takes a deep breath in to calm himself, but as he breathes out, he confesses, “Trinity made a bet with Samira that I could get anyone in the bar to buy me a drink because I kind of have a knack for it, but Samira chose you, and now they’re watching us, and I’m so sorry.”
His boss blinks at him a couple of times, probably figuring out the least problematic way to fire him or berate him for being so damn unprofessional. He should’ve just said no to Trinity and Samira and killed the vibes for the night; he’d prefer that to whatever Robby is about to say. He can already see the anger bubbling up inside him that’s going to—
“I’ll buy you a drink.”
Dennis stares at him, unblinking. After a few seconds, he manages to ask, “What?”
“I’ll buy you a drink,” Robby repeats, then leans over to pat the bar stool next to him. “But you’re going to have to earn it.”

Or, Dennis tries every trick in the book to get Dr. Robby to buy him a drink and to stay.

“M’not a fucking kid!” Dennis spits.“Stop fucking calling me that.”
On the offensive, and unable to stop, Robby bites back: “Then stop fucking acting like one!”
Dennis slumps back into his chair, seceding silently, eyes glossing. Robby pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration.
“Jesus, I— Forget it. I can’t talk to you when you’re like this.” Robby tells him, pulling his jacket from the back of his chair. “Go home, delete our chat history. This never happened. Don’t ever tell a soul about this.”
Dennis laughs mirthlessly.
Robby is not amused. He zips up his jacket and leans down a little closer to the boy.
“I’m not fucking around, Whitaker. This stays between us. You need to take this to your grave.”

In Robby’s mind, it all starts innocently; innocently enough.
He would like to think about it as… concern from a mentor.
Nothing else.
It's very selfless that and commmendable, the fact that Robby creates a throw-away instagram account to keep tabs on his residents' lives while on sabbatical.
He doesn’t address to himself that the only person he follows with this account, is Dennis Whitaker.

Summary
Buck hip checks Eddie. ‘’You good?’’
‘’Yeah. I was just looking forward at quiet Sunday afternoon at the house, not this.’’
‘’Quiet Sunday afternoon?’’ Buck chuckles. ‘’When on Earth do you and Christopher have quiet Sunday afternoons? You usually blast aliens on the TV or play Mario Kart.’’
Eddie pouts. ‘’Hey, that’s quiet.’’
‘’Sure,’’ Buck smirks.
‘’Don’t be smug. Not everyone can be a master chef like you.’’
Buck leaves the knife on the board and turns to Eddie, faking offence. ‘’What? Me, a master chef? If you haven’t noticed I’m scared shitless I won’t recognize when the dish is done because Pepa keeps saying ‘it’s over until it’s over’ and ‘just a cup of flour’ but when I ask which cup she says ‘the blue one’. The blue one is not a measuring unit Eddie. I literally have no idea what I’m doing.’’
Eddie shrugs his shoulders then lifts a piece of carrot he just peeled to Buck’s mouth so he can snack on it. ‘’You’re doing fine. I’m on peeling duty. You’re on seasoning duty.’’

The bruises mottle Buck’s skin, like paint splattered clumsily on a canvas. Except—the artist behind this, whoever they are, clearly went about it with intent and precision. A curator of hickeys; Buck’s pale thighs like the walls of a gallery. A thriving one, at that. It’s… a lot of marks.
Eddie wonders if it hurts. Well—he knows that part already, at least based on what Buck told him a few minutes ago. So instead, Eddie starts to wonder if it hurt. The procedure behind the photo; the act of being marked up so irrefutably.
Buck reacts to Eddie’s thumbs up message with a thumbs down.

Summary
"It was in the couch," Buck complains. He prods at the arm of it, looking aggrieved. "You've gotta teach this guy not to take other people's things."
"Why is that my responsibility?"
Buck twists his neck to look up at Eddie from where he's putting the sock back on, expression incredulous. "It's your couch," he justifies, once all ten toes are back in captivity. "You—brought it into this world."
"Mm-mm," Eddie hums, lips pursed, head shaking. "I want a paternity test. That couch looks nothing like me."
"You sure? You're both kinda, y'know, square. Wide—hey!" Buck yelps, because Eddie has picked up a throw pillow and is using it as a weapon against the side of Buck's head with one hand. (The other is occupied stiff-arming his beer to keep it from spilling on his... second-born, apparently.) "You didn't let me finish! You're—inviting," Buck laughs, winded, "and—and soft, and comfortable—"

Summary
“Intersex?” Buck asks, brow furrowed and just so deeply confused, “No, no, Eddie’s not intersex. She’s trans. A trans woman.” It had been a while since Buck had needed to confirm to people that Eddie was a woman. Not since the very early days of her transition before she had started hormones or gotten any of her legal documents fixed up.
The nurse blinks, then lets out a small noise of confusion herself. “Mr. Buckley, I’m not sure if Ms. Diaz has decided not to disclose something with you, and if that’s the case then -”
“I’ve known Eddie since before she transitioned. She’s not intersex,” Buck interrupts.
“Mr. Buckley,” the nurse starts again, tone more stern this time, “I’m just going off of the results of the tests we’ve done - results that we have double checked. Regardless of what she may have told you, all of our scans show that Ms. Diaz has the internal reproductive system needed for pregnancy. And that she’s currently pregnant.”
In which Eddie is pregnant. Which is strange, considering she’s a trans woman and Buck is a trans man. But who is she to look a gift horse in the mouth?
