My gaze snapped away.
I pretended to be intensely interested in the scuffed linoleum floor. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of cowardice. I heard Bakugou deliver one last scathing remark, a small explosion crackle, and then the sound of his heavy footsteps receding, followed by his sycophants.
When I finally dared to look up, Midoriya was gone. Just his scattered books remained, like forgotten relics on a battlefield.
