Summary
Steven John Harrington is an enigma that no one in the small town of Hawkins Indiana has ever tried to understand. Never has anyone even thought of attempting to unwind the mess of wires in his brain, or even pay mind to his touch aversion or obvious addiction. Not Tommy Hagan or Carol Perkins, his apparent best friends. Not his Uncle and legal guardian, Richard Harrington. Not said man’s newest, far too young wife, Mary Harrington. Not even Chief of Police Jim Hopper paid mind to the delinquent that would repeatedly get in trouble for drugs, alcohol, and parties. He pegged him as any rich high schooler, a stuck-up asshole. He could not be more far off.
The last time that Finney John Blake was hugged was exactly a year ago, October of 1982, by his little sister Gwendolyn Blake as they said goodbye. After Terrance Blake’s untimely death caused by his years of alcoholism, Finney was sent off to live with their paternal Uncle in Hawkins, Indiana while sweet Gwen stayed in Denver with their maternal Aunt Cynthia.

Eddie’s terrified. The weight lodged in his chest has shifted to complete and utter panic. His skin is hot. His eyes are burning. There was once a time when he’d say, I do not panic, but even that was a lie. Eddie panics a lot, actually. But he’s been taught how to manage it, how to make himself Jello, how to bring himself back to reality.
But this reality is what’s panic-inducing, and he can’t Jello himself out of this one.
Because he’s not scared for himself. Eddie’s killed men before. More than four at a time. Eddie’s, objectively, been in worse situations than this. Eddie’s been shot and stabbed and buried.
But he’s never been in a situation like this, with a four-year-old who means the world to him, a four-year-old who’s Buck’s son.

“I just gotta ask one thing,” Eddie interrupted, leaning over the table and closer to Steve.

18 months after the earthquake, Steve starts having bad dreams. Which wouldn’t mean anything if it weren’t for the nosebleeds and the headaches. Hearing that clock can’t be great. Then Will feels Vecna getting close, and Steve thinks it might be best for him to sacrifice himself. He’s nice like that.

Panic tastes like metal.
It's thick and suffocating.
It lives in Steve’s mouth, his lungs, his memories—cold Russian steel, demo-bats, red lightning and hands that had beaten him relentlessly. The nightmare don’t stay in the past. This trauma follows him, making him wake into breathless fear and a body that forgets how to breath.
But safety smells like Billy.
Who's carries the heat of the California sun and who holds him with steady hands through the worst of it. And coaxes air back into his lung with patience and quiet praise, all while Eddie sleeps beside them, heavily medicated, bandaged, healing, and breathing.
And when the morning comes, the proof of their warmth and love will always chase away the cold of the Upside Down and the fear of its darkness taking those he cares about with it.
