Summary
She thought so cheaply of his affection, of his desires? When he’d so foolishly allowed himself a glimmer of hope that for once, someone would choose him?
Fine.
If he couldn’t have her free choice, he would make her see him in every meal enjoyed, in every cup of tea savoured. She would think of him when she wrote, when she played the qin, when she bathed, when she opened her eyes in the morning.
He had not a moment of peace from her, and yet she saw so little of his worth, feared him like he was some sort of beast.
Fine. It was fine. He would show her what he was capable of.
He would make her crave him.

Summary
At the Turning of the Wheel, Da Qian performs an ancient rite for an abundance of sons, of crops and for persevering through the hardships of the next twelve years.
The Great Rite of Opening the Jade Gate of Life.
It’s origins are older than written record, and some of the rite has been adapted to be more palatable to a conservative society. Still, scholars and officials are forced to admit—through gritted teeth—that with its barely euphemistic ceremonies, at its core: it’s about fertility and sex.
Despite all the naysayers, all the calls for decency, all divinations show that when the Rite fails, so too will the nation.
And so the Great Rite endures.
Last time, as the barren Empress, Jiang Xuening watched from the sidelines, seething as a Phoenix-crowned, red-robed nothing was showered with the respect Xuening had strived for her whole life, even as the little upstart’s husband proved to be even more impotent than Xuening’s own.
In this life, however, she is recently married, and—she is the Jade Gate Bride.
Xie Wei is her Master.

Summary
Jiang Xuening is a poor student and an unruly young woman. She offers nothing of value to Yan Lin, but dares to accept his regard anyway. Xie Wei is not pleased with their entanglement, and is pleased even less when she comes to him requesting special instruction with the offer of nebulous service in compensation.
She doesn't mean what he gleans from her offer, but his own interpretation is superior. The service he demands from her will force her to part from Yan Lin, sparing his cousin the headache of an unworthy woman and a lifetime of strife. There are other benefits, of course. Actions with only a single benefit aren't worthwhile.
