    Summary

“Wanna bet on it?” he asks.

Mydei raises a brow, then, narrows his eyes.

“Bet on what?” he asks suspiciously, not unlike how one pokes a sleeping tiger.

“Bet that you can plan better dates,” Phainon says. “That you’re a better lover.”

    Mydei scoffs.

“Against that male alpha? Any decent human being would win.”

Phainon pauses, an idea forming in his head. And it’s such a bad idea. Such a stupid idea. But, it could be fun. And Mydei has always indulged his stupid ideas.

“What about against me?” he asks.

(Phainon and Mydei have always been known for their competitions. It's the basis of their almost four year friendship. There's no reason they can't also compete over who's the better date either.)

    Summary

He thinks it ironic that Olruggio’s kindness is his salvation and his undoing—the link that keeps him alive and the torturous burden that prevents his peace.

He ought to be angry at him. He thinks a part of him is.

But time tempers all emotions, and, even back then, Qifrey couldn’t find the energy to stay angry at him for long. It was Olruggio’s nature, after all, to sacrifice himself on the altar if it meant saving one more life.

(On Olruggio, and the nature of their relationship, as seen by Qifrey.)

    Summary

“Can I not simply stare to admire you?” he murmurs. He’s five paces away. Four. Three. Two. He stands close enough to see the freckles on Phainon’s golden-hued skin, close enough to breathe in his earthy scent. His want is a physical being that demands he grip Phainon’s body and never let go lest this moment slips away from them both. He cups Phainon’s face, and Phainon settles his hands on his hips.

Sometimes, he watches Phainon and thinks how fortunate it is that they can be this kind, this delicate with each other now.

“I think you’re the more eye-catching one between the two of us, Mydeimos,” Phainon says. His lips twitch, and Mydei can feel the muscles of his cheek moving under his fingers.

What a miracle it is that they have this now. What a relief.

“They can say no if they aren’t okay with it.”

“Okay with what?” Phainon asks curiously. Mydei catches him glancing his way before meeting Cipher’s eyes again.

“It’s nothing bad,” Cipher simpers. “Just a little bit of acting on the public stage.”

“What is it?” Mydei asks warily.

Cipher’s grin widens into something almost manic.

“I want you both to fake date each other to advertise this show.”

(Fake dating, stage chemistry, and falling in love.)

    Summary

    “Can I help y—”

He hears someone yelp before something collides into him at full force, small and short and sobbing. Mydei grunts in surprise, steadying himself against the door. He glances down and finds a familiar head of white hair on a body much smaller than it should be. Much smaller.

He blinks. The child latches tighter onto his leg.

    Summary

“Why do you think you’re from a different world?” Mydei asks.

“Last night, I went to sleep in the same bedroom as you in the house we've had since last year,” Phainon says. “This morning, I woke up in an unfamiliar room that looks like it was built a thousand years ago. You weren’t in bed with me, there wasn’t a wedding band on my finger, and”—his eyes flicker to Mydei’s chest, a fiery blush blooming on his face—“you’re half-naked.”

“We sleep together?” Mydei asks, surprised.

    Phainon deadpans.

    “We’re married.”

(Phainon finds himself in a modern Amphoreus where he and Mydei have been married for years. Mydei finds himself with a Phainon that claims the two of them are married.)

    Summary

“I love you,” Mydei blurts without preamble.

Phainon stops entirely. His eyes widen. Mydei’s hands twitch at his sides. He holds Phainon’s gaze, jaw clenched and body wound like a spring, watching Phainon swallow—Adam’s apple bobbing.

“What?” he breathes, the word cracking at the end.

    Mydei takes a deep breath.

“I love you,” he repeats. “I offer my body and soul to you—my equal in every way, the one worthy to stand beside me. Across thirty-three million cycles, my affections for you have never changed. If our old promises during every one of those cycles still continue to mean something to you as well, then I intend to honor them starting today—if you will let me.”

(Mydei and Phainon get together. As it turns out, that’s the easy part.)

    Summary

Alhaitham exhales roughly and turns back towards his room. Moments later, he hears six pairs of footsteps following him.

He swings his door open and raises a brow.

Kaveh’s eyes narrow. He peeks inside, taking in the muddy floors, the flowers strewn all over the place, and the leaves scattering the floors. Alhaitham watches Kaveh scan the room before his eyes flit over Alhaitham, and then the Aranara, and then Alhaitham again.

Through it all, the Aranara continue to stare at Alhaitham like he’s the biggest disappointment they’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting.

    Kaveh’s lips twitch.

    “Don’t you dare.”

    Summary

He turns to Mydei, letting a gentle smile curve on his lips. Mydei’s eyes narrow to slits.

“Hello there,” Phainon greets softly. He crouches down, inching closer. Mydei doesn’t budge, only tenses like a tightly coiled spring. “My name is Phainon. You’re Mydeimos, right?”

Mydei doesn’t respond, lips pressed tightly shut. Phainon’s smile wavers, chest squeezing tight.

“No one’s going to hurt you here,” he murmurs, extending his arm out. Mydei growls. Fear flashes through his eyes for a fleeting second, but it’s enough to have Phainon freezing in place, breath catching in his throat.

    Summary

“What did you think of the concert, Phainon?”

    Phainon’s lips quirk up ruefully.

“It was exhilarating as always. None of your sets ever gets old.”

“And me?” he asks curiously. His hands clench into fists. “What does it look like while I’m on the stage?”

The smile fades. Phainon bites his lips. His knuckles are white where they grip the yoke.

“You look untouchable when you’re on the stage,” he says, the words resigned and sad. “Like a force of nature.”

(It takes Mydei and Phainon eight plane rides to make their way home.)

    Summary

There are a few truths Mydei has learned about Phainon over the years: his habits, his instincts, his hopes, his dreams. He’s learned the best ways to pull him out of a slump, and the worst too. He’s learned of Phainon’s partiality for sweets and antiques, and his dislike of bitterness and cruelty. He’s learned his determination, his hunger to prove, as boundless as his lack thereof of worth in the face of concepts like “fate” and “deliverance.”

More importantly, he’s learned Phainon always comes when ordered.

    Summary

Phainon wakes to his Phaidei account exploding with notifications, a small war in his comments section, and half the people convinced he’s running the Phaidei account, with the top reply being:

    Deliberber @phaifan33550336
    replying to @phaidei
Dawg look at my deliverer shipping himself with Mydeimos we’re cooked

It’s enough for him to click on his Weaver account in a frenzied panic, scroll to the settings, and click “delete”—mashing all the buttons, captchas, and “deletes” until he finally sees the “This account no longer exists” on his page.

“Oh my god,” he mutters, heart racing. He chucks his teleslate on his bed and flops back down.

    Summary

“You smell good,” Mydei murmurs, lips skimming across his skin. Phainon shivers, heat warming him like he’s entering his own rut. Mydei presses closer, his arms wrapping around Phainon’s waist. “Your skin is cold.”

“You’re just running hot,” Phainon mutters, fingers flexing on Mydei’s waist. He feels high-strung, body coiled tight as he lets Mydei brush his cheek against his skin like a cat.

Mydei huffs a laugh, and Phainon feels it rumble against him like an earthquake.

    “I didn’t do anything wrong, did I?”

“You didn’t,” Mydei says, his gaze averting from Phainon. He takes a deep breath, steeling himself. “You did nothing wrong, Phainon.”

“Then… what do we need to talk about?” He watches Phainon take a hesitant step forward. Mydei curses, frustrated, and jerks his head up.

“I think we should take a break.”

    Summary

    “Al-Haitham, what—”

    He freezes.

There is a child in Al-Haitham’s covers, on Al-Haitham’s bed. A child. They can’t be older than two or three from how tiny they are. Their hair is a messy bird’s nest of gray strands, and their hands are small—gripped tight to Al-Haitham’s sheets. The child is drowning in the shirt they have on, the sleeves reaching their elbows and the collar drooping over their chest. For one nonsensical moment, Kaveh thinks, Al-Haitham never told him he had a child.

“So you two never, say, fell into the same cot together?”

He feels a sharp flick to his forehead. Phainon flinches, eyes lifting to meet Mydei’s scowl. Despite the severe expression, there’s a slight flush to his cheeks—his golden eyes shifting from Phainon’s gaze. Something in Phainon sinks like a stone.

“Have you no propriety, Deliverer?” Mydei asks. “Did no one teach you any manners?”

Phainon forces out a sheepish laugh, his smile unsteady.

    “My apologies,” he says.

“To be honest, Mydeimos,” he says shakily, “I wish I had the courage to say what I wanted to say before you left. I wish I had the… I guess the selfishness to ask for what I want without reservations. I wish for a lot of things regarding you. And I pray for a lot of things from you as well. There are a lot of regrets I hold surrounding you. And I will probably hold them for a long time.”

Mydei slowly straightens his posture, eyeing Phainon critically.

“There is nothing stopping you from telling me now,” he says. “This is your prayer, after all.”

    Summary

For a moment, Kaveh simply stares—eyes trailing up and down Al-Haitham. The scent of mourning flowers weighs down the air—sticking to his throat like a certain kind of ambrosia. His hands are hesitant in their approach—cheeks pink.

“What is it?” Al-Haitham asks, growing warm under the attention.

“Nothing—nothing just—” he exhales shakily. And then, Kaveh’s hand suddenly strokes him from base to tip, and Al-Haitham’s breath hitches. “I can’t believe we’re doing this.”

“We are,” he murmurs, lips quirked.

    Summary

His first debate with Kaveh, Urchin of Kshahrewar, is a banal one—a topic many Vahumana scholars have argued to death for years.
