Summary
“Say it,” Charles repeats, lowering his voice, crowding Max even closer to him and against the wall, his breath ghosting over the Dutch’s lips.
Max gulps, eyes dropping to Charles’ mouth for a second. It’s almost impossible to see, but Charles has sharp senses, and that small flicker has his heart pounding like crazy inside his chest. Max has the same dazed look that he had last year, when they smelled each other for the first time. Blue, bright eyes look at Charles, and that daring look becomes a daring move when Max’s arms move, curling around the other boy’s neck.
“Say it,” Charles repeats.
And Max shakes his head no.
“Kiss me?” he says instead, and Charles is nothing but a good listener.
The world quiets around them when their mouths collide in a messy first kiss. It’s wet, a little painful, and full of inexperience and hunger. It is a first for both after all.
It feels better than any win could ever.

Summary
Sometimes, the cold lighting of the meeting rooms in Milton Keynes would catch just so on the string around Max's finger and he’d do a doubletake at its colour. Under the fluorescents, it looked faded, as if someone had siphoned out some of its vibrancy.
He wished he could photograph it, so that he could compare how it changed day by day. Prove to himself that he wasn’t imagining things. That he really was dying.
-----
