“That guy sucked,” Steve said simply, slipping off his shoes and going to sit next to Eddie on the couch. “He never wanted to hang out with any of your friends, or do anything you wanted to do, he was a douche.”
Steve rubbed Eddie’s calf comfortingly and Eddie sighed. “But he liked me.”
“Not enough. You can’t just settle for anyone who likes you, plenty of people like you,” Steve argued.
“Not like that,” Eddie said dejectedly as he sunk further into the couch. Steve got quiet then and stood up to walk to the kitchen.

Steve was the real surprise. He more than just had a soul. He’s actually maybe has the best soul. Though he’s not totally book smart, he’s a genius in other ways. Total heart of gold hero. Plus ripping a bat’s head off with his teeth? Tearing the body apart with his bare hands? Woah. So Eddie was wrong. Steve totally deserves to be with someone as cool as Nancy Wheeler. They deserve to be happy and in love together. Nothing has ever made more sense.
Or

He skims the text—Sweet sunshine with the dark storm eyes...your gaze met mine—I’m hoping I’m not the only one who felt their heart stop, and shit, Steve's might stop now because hell if he's anything but a hopeless romantic—but then he processes Robin's eyes. On him.
Staring very intently.
“Wait," Steve frowns. Robin just blinks.
“You don’t,” he shakes his head slow; “you don’t like honestly think,” but even as he’s saying it, the look in her eyes starts to answer for her:

The teacher huffs out a laugh, these kids are not very observant. “Uh, I’m engaged actually.”

"Another for the handsome nobleman,” and this guy two stools down gestures first, and says it with a stilted lilt that’s somehow not disingenuous; "whom I say doth sit alone beyond comprehension."
Steve stares wordless for a second because, outside of that weird fucking Renaissance Fair thing the kids dragged him to, he’s never heard anyone talk like that. Definitely not in the middle of Midtown, with a distinct lack of turkey legs in sight.
But then the man starts again, something close to bashful when he clears his throat and asks:
“Perhaps this very handsome nobleman would also enjoy some company,” and his tone’s not even playing coy for the hope in it:
“Even if only that of a humble bard, such as myself?”
