Summary
"Are you alright, Mary?"
Mary nodded. Mrs. Gardiner didn't say anything. Mary sighed and shook her head, burying her face on her hands. She took several deep breaths, trying to keep herself from crying, and felt Mrs. Gardiner's hand rest on her shoulder.
"It's about—Mr. Hayward," Mary said, straightening up and tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Mrs. Gardiner nodded, her gaze sympathetic.
"I am worried," Mary started, carefully choosing her words as she struggled against the tears pricking at her eyes, "that I—that he—that we do not feel the same way about each other," she finished lamely, ducking her head.
"Oh, Mary," Mrs. Gardiner said, her voice filled with kindness. Mary choked back a sob and buried her face in Mrs. Gardiner's shoulder, shaking as she tried to fight back her tears to no avail.
OR: Tom Hayward is trying his absolute best to keep Mary from feeling the least bit uncomfortable around him. Mary, however, is worried that his lack of direct affection signals a deeper lack of emotion towards her. They talk it out.

Bookmarker's Notes
"Mary scrunched her nose—at this point Tom, if he hadn't known her so well, would have assumed she was trying to make him collapse like a house of cards.
Of course, Mary would attempt nothing of the sort.
He collapsed anyway."

Summary
“Did I do something wrong?” Shane asks, his voice cracking on the last word. He detests being vulnerable and asking for reassurance, even from people he’s comfortable with. And he would probably describe this situation as literally anything but comfortable.
He bites his lip and hopes the blood he draws will distract him from the stinging in his eyes.
“No, Hollander,” Rozanov answers. “It was not you.”
“Okay, well, if it’s not me, will you at least look at me?” Shane snaps. “You don’t kiss me all night, except for that one time in that disgusting fucking bathroom, you don’t want to talk to me in bed, and now you won’t even look at me anymore. How am I supposed to think that that’s not about me? Do I really mean that fucking little to you?”
Or: What if Shane actually sends the text in Vegas?

Summary
We didn't even kiss.
Ilya gets the message just as he’s pouring himself some more vodka; he doesn’t want to admit how much those four words squeeze his heart, so he just smirks and sends back, You want it that bad, Hollander? Come get it.
He puts the phone down, sure that’ll get rid of him and is just taking another sip of his drink when there’s a knock at the door.
