Summary
When Penelope had given Odysseus permission to find…company during the war (provided they were men and ones she’d approve of), he hadn’t at first thought that he’d take her up on that offer. And then he got to know Diomedes of Argos. He had gotten far closer to the man than he had expected.
And when given the possibility of the two of them getting even closer, he of course wanted to take the opportunity in stride.
He had no idea that Diomedes wouldn’t want to do the same. -

Summary
At first, Telemachus thought it was him. He thought that maybe, as Odysseus got to know his son, he was becoming so disgusted with Telemachus and all his failings that he disliked even touching Telemachus. Why else would he flinch every time Telemachus touched him?
But Athena had sworn that Odysseus loved Telemachus. As did Penelope. And, other than his seemingly automatic flinch response, Odysseus spent an almost absurd amount of time around Telemachus, matched only by his time around Penelope.
Clearly, this was something else.

Telemachus knew that soldiers often came home from war changed. [...]
Aggression was Odysseus’ normal response when scared. [...] When touched, he… recoiled. Not to a defensive stance, to however far away he could get with no grace or planning.

Summary
I told him that it was a bad idea. Spying on Troy was a crazy idea in itself, but posing as
a pair of beggars at that? Sick. And rarely encountered. Risky. It couldn’t have succeeded. That’s why for the first time since the war had started I refused him. I didn’t believe that he would go there alone.Aka typical 'Odysseus as captive of Trojans', except they're furries now

He would forget where he was, with whom he was and what was he doing there, deadly convinced, that he was still enslaved in the Trojan citadel. That was when he started to panic.
