Summary
For the first five-hundred years of my life, I didn't realize I was a “pokémon.” Upon awakening hazy memories of my past life and realizing I used to be some weak creature, I summarily ignored them. I forgot about it for centuries, until I had second thoughts and meditated on the matter.
Ignoring it for so long would be something I regretted for quite a while. It turned out, these "humans" were something to pay attention to.

The legend said: "Klabautermann only appear when the ship is doomed”... but the problem with legends that they gloss over the important details. How long does it take for that to happen? When does a ship count as doomed? What if you had already seen it? (could you prevent it?)
Or, a person is reborn as the Kabuterman of the Moby Dick, and seeks to prevent its doom.
