Summary
Peter’s eyes focus on where MJ’s necklace rests right at the girl’s collarbone, at the way her fingers trace the broken pendant fondly. His gaze drifts to examine her features more closely, eyes widening as he realizes just what had made her seem so familiar.
MJ’s cheekbones. His nose. MJ’s height. His hands.
Oh, god.
“Who are you?” MJ slowly asks. The girl smiles at her, looking relieved but still a little awkward—and dammit if that’s not all Peter, too.
“I’m your daughter May, from the future. And I think I made a big, big mistake.”

“Class,” he moves to wrap an arm around Peter Parker’s shoulders and almost drags him forward. “Meet your muse for the summer.”
Michelle sighs.
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

“Is it okay if he does that?”
“He’s gonna give himself back problems if he keeps it up,” Gwen says, misunderstanding Michelle’s point as she walks over to close the still open window, “I keep telling him to just leap out face forward like a normal person.”
“No, I mean the-- going out like that. He literally just came home,” Michelle says as Gwen turns back to her with a funny expression on her face.
“That’s Peter,” Gwen says, almost sounding a little sad-- Michelle not missing the way her smile doesn’t reach her eyes as she says, “But he’s good for it. He’ll be back. He always does.”
Michelle’s not convinced but realizes yet again that she’s the one without all the information, half-paying attention when Gwen starts talking about what they’re going to eat for dinner and catching herself staring out the window towards the city.

Michelle scoffs at that, insulted almost to the point of being speechless as Gwen says, “I think you’d really like him if you got to know him.”
She stares at one of her best friends, wondering what she ever did to deserve someone as good and as kind and as caring as Gwen - knowing that Peter Parker of all people did not deserve her too.
Michelle laughs, rolling her eyes as Gwen gives yet another exasperated sigh.
“Not a chance.”

Peter huffs out a laugh, legs dangling over the rooftop. A siren goes off, then another— a warning sign if there ever was one that their time was limited.
“You should talk,” Peter says, hand still testing across his midsection as the other waves around in the air— eyes still out on the horizon. “I can smell the blood on you from here.”
Matt says nothing, but Peter didn’t think he would.
He knows better than to expect that of him.

(Matthew would pray if he thought it would help. But God casts His gaze elsewhere when Peter Parker steps into the room.)
Peter Parker doesn’t belong to him, has never belonged to him. It’s so easy to ignore that most days. The Spider lets himself breathe more, lets himself open like a winter flower under the first ray of spring. It’s shaky, it’s tentative, but it’s there. Glaring at Matt like the blade of a guillotine.
Attraction smolders from Peter’s body, in the kicked-up heartbeat and the increased perspiration and the way his attention is leaden. Weighted. Pointed the way a predator might observe prey. Matt isn’t sure if Peter has even realized, isn’t sure where the lines of creature and human blur.

“I can think of a lot of other ways we can have fun,” he says, voice dropping an octave and dipping down to press his forehead against hers.
Mary Jane was bright and fun and the perfect kind of distraction he needs this week.
City full of millions and yet it felt like a city of ghosts, the loss of his father still fresh and still painful no matter how hard he tried to run.
