Shane stared at him, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief. "You just lost your—Ilya, we dropped her off to preschool! We are coming back to get her in exactly three hours and forty-five minutes!"

Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
Right???

It’s just that, after nearly a decade, after so much pain and heartache and distance, Shane Hollander is here in Ilya’s kitchen, looking at him with such obvious love and care and worry. It’s just that, after everything Ilya’s done over the years to deter Shane from loving him, Shane’s stubbornly, doggedly refused to stop.
It’s just that Ilya kept that stupid, ugly t-shirt—wore it by himself in his big empty house, wore it smoking on his balcony, wore it to sleep, packed it with him when he went back to Russia for his father’s funeral—because he thought that it might be the only bit of Shane he ever got to keep.
And he was wrong. God, he’s never been more grateful to be wrong in his life.
