The tension, fear and shame Jannik is holding onto escapes with a puff of air – a sigh that releases upon the word lovely as it always does whenever he reads this poem.
A type of permission at the end of the short confessional, telling the reader that whatever it is that’s causing the flames to consume them is not necessarily bad, wrong, or even wasteful.
To Jannik, the short verse is a brief but rapturous declaration of one’s right to live and die in a blaze of something if one so chooses. A belief in forging one’s destiny with their own two hands…consequences and all…
In a world where Novak Djokovic doesn’t become the greatest tennis player in history, he becomes something much worse…
Jannik Sinner recognizes him anyway.

Summary
Jack is aware that Jannik is staying at the same hotel. He is hyper-aware of everything around him, and the awareness lingers beneath his skin like static. Part of him almost expects to see Jannik with every step, as if rounding a corner too fast might land him face-first into the one person he’s spent months trying not to look for. And stupidly, traitorously, there’s a piece of him that wants to catch a glimpse, even from a distance, just enough to confirm he’s real and not just Jack’s perfect fantasy. But wanting to see him isn’t the same as being ready for it. Because seeing him means remembering what he can’t have, what slipped through his fingers before he was brave enough to hold onto it.

Jannik’s not sure how they ended up here. Five minutes ago, he’d been coming back from the awkward post-victory photoshoot in the Center Court lounge, stopping by the deserted cafeteria for a coffee and to massage his aching quads. He hadn’t expected anyone else to join him except maybe Darren and Simone, though they’d said their goodbyes already. If anyone, it certainly would not have been Ben Shelton, who by all logic should have skipped town after Jannik avenged his Shanghai loss.
But here they are. And what’s he supposed to say—no?
Schlutzkrapfen, sambuca, and the seventeen hours between Vienna and Paris.
